OLD MUSIC OUTSELLS HIP HOP RAP FLAP For the first time in U.S. history, catalogue albums outsell new releases. Catalogue albums are records that release more than 18 months ago. According to Nielsen’s annual year end music report, catalogue albums outsell current releases by 4.3 million copies, something never before seen in the music industry. Judging by Record Store Day’s annual parade of reissues, record labels notice this new trend, too. In 2016, vinyl records are a hot commodity.

BILL CONWAY [ex PD/OM Entercom KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Elvis death day. Hey Jim, Your note in the 8/15 newsletter about hearing of Elvis’s death while driving to Houston to work at KIKK reminded me of that day. I was PD & PM Drive at KWIC-FM in Beaumont and was on the air when my Morning guy Steve Golden called the hotline to tell me that the TV stations were breaking in saying Elvis Presley had died. I went to the AP teletype and the story was just printing. We only had a few Elvis records so our GM the legendary Terrell Metheny went to record stores and K Mart and bought every record he found. Our midday guy Jay Michaels went into production and put together a 2 hour special and we played Elvis songs through the following weekend. That was part of what was great about radio back then. JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Baby the rain must fall. Hey Jim, Steve McQueen’s vocals were dubbed by Billy Strange, a songwriter and musician who wrote songs for Elvis Presley and others and arranged and played guitar on records by Nancy Sinatra and the Beach Boys among others. Former Limeliter Glenn Yarbrough had a hit recording of the title song. And if you look closely at the scene in that honky-tonk where Steve McQueen is lip-synching that song you’ll see Glen Campbell playing backup guitar behind McQueen. So sad to know that he has Alzheimer’s. Jim Bell; Lufkin

BILL BRAGG [Voice of BIG TEX 2002-12] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Hey Jim! I was sad to see your mention of Pete Fountain’s passing! I did a series of Shows (I don’t think they ever decided on a Name before the Project was canceled) with Pete Fountain, Woody Herman and Dave Brubeck at the Dallas KTVT Studios on North Central Expressway. I was sitting in the Break Room when Pete Fountain walked-in and helped himself to a cup of our (terrible) coffee. When he asked “where do I pay?”; I smarted-off and announced “It’s a Tin Roof”! And when he asked what I meant, I said “It’s on the House”. Being the nice guy he always was; he laughed out loud all the way back to the Studio! TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 14, 1988 Shadoe Stevens replaces Casey Kasem as host of American Top 40. Casey Kasem exits American Top 40 over contract concerns with ABC.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KNUS. I remember when KNUS (FM) was across the street from Tithes (Ed: Titche’s) on Elm. Also the McLendon Theaters were next door. I was a defector I preferred KFJZ 1270 at times to KLIF or KNUS. In the 70s enjoyed Jim Thomas on KFJZ not sure is he still around? At night use to like Tom Donovan, WHAS 840. I am not sure but both Music and Radio take up a lot of my time, the other is being a Rail fan. I wish Age of Steam had not left Fair Park for Frisco. Been putting me a CD together of me playing songs about trains. KC5RAI, Charles
TAHIR SHAH (Arabian Nights – Caravan of Moroccan Dreams) There is nothing like a train journey for reflection.
