LIZ PATRANELLA [Liz Houston – KTSA-550, KBAT-680] (Austin, TX) Subject: Tom Ellis Address. Hi, Jim, I was able to reach Tom’s wife, Arlene, by phone. She said Tom is in a rehab facility and unable to do any email at this time. He had the surgery and the radiation, which was very hard on him. He is working on recovery and she asked that I contact her again in a month’s time. I told her we are praying for him … and she said she would tell him that we called and that we are praying for his recovery. She sounded very tired and did not want to say too much at this time. But she thanked me repeatedly for calling and checking on him. I will follow up in a month, as she requested, and will let you know how he is then. At least we know that he is OK right now. Liz

GARY MCBRAYER (Ridgewood, NJ) Subject: Issue #1602 Trivia Correction. Jim, Regarding your Charlie & Harrigan trivia answer, a slight correction. Dan (Patrick) McCurdy actually replaced Jack Woods as the next Charlie Brown in August of 1964. He had been the all night guy previously. When he and Ron Chapman both left the station in May of 1965 (Dan left for Boston’s WMEX ) an entirely new Charlie & Harrigan team replaced them. Paul Menard actually was the third Irving Harrigan when Jack Woods returned as Charlie Brown in 1966. Ironically at that point, Dan was then working as the morning guy on KBOX (1480) as Dan Patrick. Also, Chuck Dunaway and Bobby Brock missed each other at K-BOX by a year. Chuck was there very briefly in 1962 as PD before going over to KLIF (and yes hired Ken Dowe at KBOX in March), and Bobby Brock, one of my all time favorite K-BOX jocks, was there in ’63 and ’64. I’ve always wondered where Bobby is today. He worked at WFAA (570) for many years. Gary McBrayer

KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Jim, Long ago and far away, in those golden days of yesteryear…before it was “Charlie & Harrigan” at KLIF/1190…it was “Murphy & Harrigan.” “Starring Ron Chapman as Irving Harriman, with Tom Murphy.” Then, came Charlie Brown, and the long running and celebrated “Charlie & Harrigan” at the much praised broadcast giant, KLIF/1190. And, that’s the way it was. Ron’s retired and still with us, living in Dallas just a few blocks from me. We occasionally have lunch. A living legend, for sure! Ken
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 20, 1922 WIP-AM goes on-the-air as Philadelphia, PA’s first commercial radio station founded by Gimbels department store. Many listeners mistakenly believe WIP stands for Wireless In Philadelphia, We’re In Philadelphia or Watch Its Progress. But, in fact, WIP is just a call sign that the federal government randomly selects.
DAN MCCURDY [Charlie & Harrigan-Charlie Brown/Irving Harrington-KLIF-1190 08/64-06/65/WMEX- Boston/Dan Patrick-KBOX-1480 65] (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1602) March 27, 2017 [Monday]. To fully describe the C&H period at KLIF (1190)… Founding member Jack Woods was replaced as Charlie Brown in July 1964 by Dan McCurdy (KLIF’s previous overnighter). Ron [Irving Harrigan] Chapman, was succeeded in 1965 by Paul Menard. Chapman went to WFAA-TV as host of teen dance show ‘Sumpin’ Else’ while, also in ’65, McCurdy joined WMEX-AM in Boston, MA as morning air personality.
WILLARD SCOTT (March 7, 1934 – p) I have the best job in the entire history of broadcasting.
