LAST ORIGINAL RAMONE IS GONE In August 1974 Punk Rock quartet The Ramones forms in New York City. Each member of the group takes Ramone as their last name. The Ramones include Joey (Jeffrey Hyman – vocals), Johnny (John Cummings – guitar), Dee Dee (Douglas Colvin – bass) and Tommy (Tom Erdelyl – drums). Clad in leather jackets and long black mops of hair, The Ramones influence a generation of Rock bands which earns them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnny dies in 2004 of prostate cancer. Joey passes in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Dee Dee dies from a drug overdose in 2002. On Friday, July 12, 2014 the last surviving member of the original group, Tommy Ramone, dies at 62 of cancer in hospice care.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST After the firing of shock jock Anthony Cumia on July 3, 2014 for a political/curse word incident SiriusXM appears to be moving right along with Gregg [Opie] Hughes and Anthony’s replacement Jim Norton. To further illustrate how what we do outside of the office might impact our employment status is the case of (now former) Georgia Public Broadcasting producer Clay Bolton. Alternative weekly Creative Loafing photographs Bolton as he wears a t-shirt with a non printable phrase which protests the Atlanta Braves move to the suburbs. Bolton’s t-shirt company produces the shirts. GPB fires its producer Clay Bolton because of the non-printable phrase on his t-shirt.
SHOULD HOLLYWOOD WHACK RADIO TALK SHOW HOSTS? Chilton Radio Corp. puts KSKY-660 on the air on September 28, 1941. KSKY flips to a long time Christian format until when it switches to Conservative talk. Salem News & Talk KSKY-660 (The Answer) Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX call sign stands for the sky roof of the Hotel Stoneleigh in Dallas. While filling in for Mark Davis, Salem VP News and Talk Programming Tom Tradup asks his guest heavyweight Hollywood film producer Jerry Bruckheimer if he ever thinks about a movie plot where the villain goes around whacking radio talk show hosts. Bruckheimer quickly replies: Oh, I don’t think so. We wouldn’t want to lose our talk show hosts, that would be terrible!
CAR CRASHES INTO CNN LOBBY Shortly after 4:00 am Friday morning, June 13, 2014 a Mercedes crashes into CNN’s lobby in downtown Atlanta, GA. All local TV stations converge on the scene during their 5:00 am newscasts and show the car with Florida license plates already out of the lobby and ready for a flatbed. Meredith owned CBS affiliate WGCLTV claims to be first on the scene. Anchors Michelle Burdo and Frank Wiley tease the story at the top of the 5:00 am news and go live to Rebecca Schramm at 5:03. She tells viewers she hears unconfirmed reports from security guards that the driver might be drunk. WSB TV’s Liz Artz says a taxi driver says the car drives onto the Omni Hotel sidewalk and straight into the CNN building.

MICHAEL O’SHEA [ex KLIF-1190 PD/for Pres/GM Cascade Radio Group-now MM at Sonoma Media Group] (Santa Rosa, CA) Dear Jim… Just so sad to hear of your loss. My heart goes out to you. I have a little Shih Tzu, Cosmo, age 4…and I’d be devastated with his loss. Stay strong…and know that somewhere there is a little boy (or girl) dog that needs to be rescued…and you can be his/her rescuer. These little creatures have limited life spans…typically the larger dogs (over 40 pounds) less than the smaller ones. But in those few years they touch our soul and change our lives. And they make us better for their existence and our relationship. And we do the same for them. God bless Lacy…and just be comforted to know that she is not in pain any longer…and is romping with perfectly good hips and a new heart. Hang in there, Jim. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim, So sad to address you without including Lacy Girl. From what you’ve been telling me, her passing quickly was fortunate both for you and for her. Lingering in the shape she was in was only causing unbearable anguish for you…and for certain Lacy Girl wasn’t enjoying it either. May Lacy Girl rest in peace. Tom

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Jim I just read of Lacy’s passing. I’m so very sorry. I know how much you loved her and I’m sure she knew it. I know first hand how hard it is to lose a family member. Our sweet 13 year old dachshund, Pudge died about a month ago. First days are really hard. Take comfort in knowing Lacy is in a better place with no pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you Jim. God Bless, Bob Tomlinson.

KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) That’s heartbreaking, Jim. I have a toy Schnauzer just about to turn four. Wolfie (Kaiser Wolfgang) is my shadow. Every where I go, he goes. He weighs just 12 pounds, so he’s easy for Dottie to handle, bathe, etc. He doesn’t get up until I do, and stays at my side all day and night. He is snuggled against me on the couch as I write this here in Santa Fe. I will pray for a solution for Lacy. When your pets get as close as ours, they are no different from the people you love. Thanks, Jim. Ken
