ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
MAVERICK’S GAME OF POKER ENDS In the 1950s one of our most popular TV shows is wisecracking frontier gambler Maverick and as an ex-con turned private eye on The Rockford Files starring James Garner. James handles all of his roles on TV and in the movies smooth as silk and with class. Garner has the leading-man looks that lead to roles in big-screen dramas and light comedies. One of our favorites of his movies is his 1985 Oscar-nominated Murphy’s Romance. James Garner is born James Scott Bumgarner (some references say Baumgarner) in Norman, OK. In the 1980s, Garner appears in a series of Polaroid TV ads. On Saturday evening, July 19, 2014 James Garner dies of natural causes in his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.

GUN SHOT AT REPORTER FALSE ALARM Recently, a drive by gunshot fires at WVVA TV NBC CH 6 Lewisburg-Bluefield-Beckley, WV reporter Annie Moore from a passing car while she shoots video at the scene where a body is found. Evidently the gunshot is a false alarm because The Washington Times reports the sound Moore mistakes for a gunshot is a pickup truck that backfires. Beckley police detective Morgan Bragg says that as the driver of the truck passes by the crime scene on Monday, July 21, 2014 his vehicle backfires, as he confesses it often does. WVVA TV News Director Elisabeth Shaffer, posts an update to the station’s story: we are relieved that the outcome appears not to have been as serious as originally thought.
TSA NEEDS GEOGRAPHY LESSON A TSA agent who isn’t familiar with the District of Columbia should shout Oops! We might file this incident under people who need a geography lesson because a TSA agent in Orlando, FL recently stops Washington correspondent for Cox Media Group, Justin Gray, because he does not recognize his D.C. driver’s license as a valid form of identification. Gray says his license is legal and up-to-date but the agent says he does not recognize the license and asks the reporter for his passport. Gray informs the agent that he does not have his passport. But, after a brief conversation, Justin realizes that the agent does not know what the District of Columbia is. Bravo TSA!
NEXTMEDIA IS NO MORE Like when hurricane Ike strikes us here in Houston, TX in the early morning hours on Saturday, September 13, 2008 Digity snares NextMedia’s 33 radio stations with a mighty force. The first to feel the pinch of the takeover is Chicago-area executive Patrick Pendergast, who is with NextMedia since July 2010 as General Manager of four radio stations: WJOL-1340, WCCQ FM, WRXQ FM, and WSSR FM. Next Gladiator to fall is Scott Kosak General Manager of WERV FM who is with NextMedia since August 2011. Digity’s purchase of NextMedia for $84,975,200 brings an end to NextMedia’s nearly 15 years as a radio station owner/operator.

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Subject: Lacy. Hi, Jim, You bet it takes a long while to get used to not having our favorite companion/s with us. Every little thing reminds us that what once was a most precious living touch or sound is in reality now just our subconscious memories and feelings working for us to let us know that deep down inside our soul, our friendly companion is still here with us, and always will be. It only works for loving, sensitive and caring individuals. Pity those who never had or can have that close relationship working for them. Tom

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) I was a major fan of Bill Young, flew to see him at KILT AM every Monday morning for years, then back to Dallas to KLIF for their music meeting. He was a great programmer, talent and gentleman, and I include his smiling face every morning in my prayers and meditations. He suffered quite a bit at the end and I think was ready to go.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Talk radio stations because the median listener age glides higher into their 60s. I believe a “Live and Local” music / personality driven format with a dedicated local state, national, news department is the correct key to restart the engine strap on your seat belt so you don’t become ejected then put it in to overdrive, paying those that play at these radio stations a living never ever an existence and just have fun. TRIVIA ANSWER: Melbourne, Australian Soft Rock duo Air Supply is British-born singer-songwriter and guitarist Graham Russell and lead vocalist Russell Hitchcock. While trying to come up with a name for their new group, Graham says he has a dream where he sees a billboard surrounded in lights with just the name Air Supply on it. In April 1979, the band releases a concept album, Life Support, which includes a picture disc with three US Top 5 singles, including Lost in Love that we play on KULF-790 which peaks at #3 in Billboard’s Hot 100 and #11 in the UK Singles Chart.
KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) Subject: Puppy. Jim, You want to remember that in her last days you were unable to care for Lacy. If it doesn’t bother you that this will happen again and again as you age, then the two of you will suffer again. And, again. For years I owned only large dogs. I was crazy about them, but my 12 pound Schnauzer is the pick if the litter. If I sound a bit harsh, I hope you will forgive me. I am attempting to share from many experiences. And, this I also know: 1) “Sometimes you must be ‘cruel’ to be kind.” 2) “Most often you wish more for others than they wish for themselves.” 3) “People invariably choose to make the same mistakes over and over.” It is your call. I will be interested in seeing what you decide. Ken
ANATOLE FRANCE (April 16, 1844 to October 12, 1924) Until one has loved an animal, (Akita doggie Lacy) a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.
