CAR CRASHES INTO CNN LOBBY Shortly after 4:00 am Friday morning, June 13, 2014 a Mercedes crashes into CNN’s lobby in downtown Atlanta, GA. All the local TV stations converge on the scene during their 5:00 am newscasts and show the car with Florida license plates already out of the lobby and ready for a flatbed. Meredith owned CBS affiliate WGCL TV claims to be first on the scene. Anchors Michelle Burdo and Frank Wiley tease the story at the top of the 5:00 am news and go live to Rebecca Schramm at 5:03. She tells viewers she hears unconfirmed reports from security guards that the driver might be drunk. WSB TV’s Liz Artz says a taxi driver says the car drives onto the sidewalk at the Omni Hotel down the sidewalk and straight into the CNN building.
MIAMI CANCELS ARTHUR GODFREY As a youngster who grows up in Dallas, TX we enjoy Arthur Godfrey’s weekly CBS-TV series. Arthur also hosts a weekday radio-TV program, Arthur Godfrey Time. In 1983, Godfrey passes away at 79. If a Miami city commission has its way, the media giant’s name will soon no longer rest in the 41st Street pavement. Miami Beach commissioner Joy Malakoff tells Riptide: He had a radio program and played the ukulele and because he broadcast his show from the South Florida area at the time [1960s] they thought that was a good idea. It was requested by the business people on 41st Street. It no longer brings anybody to the city. Miami Beach officials want to cancel Arthur Godfrey’s sign from 41st Street sidewalk.
RADIO LISTENERS PAY MORE ATTENTION TO ADS The Southern California Broadcasters Association releases its latest SCBA White Paper Research Report, Consumer Response to Broadcast Radio Commercials vs. Digital and Social Media. The just published report focuses on new SCBA-commissioned research that compares the strong recall and attention by consumers to radio commercials and then compares that data to digital platforms. SCBA President Thom Callahan says: The consumer clearly recalls and pays attention to radio commercials much more than to any digital, search engine, or social media ads. This showcases radio’s favorable commercial environment and effectiveness that will surprise and delight both advertisers and the radio industry.

BOB MILLER (Plymouth, MI) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio June 30, 2014 [Monday] Issue #1316. Hi Jim, Nice job on the new look! The first time I viewed it, I was worried. Like a lot of people my age I hate changes, but it was easy to navigate and I like it. I really enjoy the posts from Tom Ellis. You can tell a lifetime of great news writing just from the amazing way he tells a story. He was always that good. When I was his cameraman at KONO-TV I was also a huge fan of his talents. I’m going to visit San Antonio next week and, hopefully, some of my old favorite restaurants are still around. I think Ellis used to frequent the White House down there. Hipps Bubble room also comes to mind but I don’t know if it is still open. I’m very much looking forward to some tex-mex. In my humble opinion San Antonio is THE place for the best food on the planet. All the best, friend. Bob Miller Plymouth, MI

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, So sorry to read of Lacy’s passing. God be with and comfort you. Our pets are members of our families. Losing one is much the same. I have no idea when you should adopt another. You’ll know when the time is right. For now, grieve the loss. In time, you’ll mostly remember all the good times. Apologies for being out of touch. At some point gmail started sending your newsletter to my junk mail file, which I rarely check. I moved several from there back to my inbox yesterday. Maybe that’ll signal gmail that I don’t think they’re junk. Thank you for all you do to keep us up to date and for bringing back memories of radio past. Peace, David

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution. Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
MIKE SHANNON [ex Navteq traffic reporter on WBAP-820] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Hi Jim, I went “live” with the JRRR archives today. I made a few more subtle changes, including putting a very light gray background behind each group of issues…how I had it (larger font, all in bold) was a big eye strain, so that really softened it up. I also made the selections easier to choose from, and included a note that some of the ones archived on Woolley’s site may not open up. So if you’re ready to promote it on JRRR, that’s perfectly fine. If you need some more time to look it all over, that’s not a problem either. Approach it from www.dfwretroplex.com and look for the link at the top of my main page. I can take that link back down if you’re not ready just yet. Hope you had better luck with Word Press yesterday! That’s got to be beyond nerve-wracking. Take care, Mike
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1964 a San Francisco, CA area Rock band takes their name Beau Brummels because of their love of British beat music. Beau Brummel (George Bryan) is a dashing young Englishman who lives from 1778-1840 and is known for his wit and fancy clothes. He once claims that it takes him five hours to dress. The Beau Brummels debut single, Laugh, Laugh, sets the stage for the San Francisco Sound. In January 1965, Laugh, Laugh enters Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart and peaks at #15 in February.
