POPULAR STAND UP COMIC STOPS BREATHING Brooklyn-born stand-up comic with a half-century of the bright lights, Joan Rivers, rushes to Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday morning, August 28, 2014 after she undergoes a procedure on her vocal cords at the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic. Sources tell WCBS TV CH 2 that 81-year-old Rivers stops breathing during a throat procedure and is in cardiac arrest when paramedics speed her to Mount Sinai which is one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in the United States. On Friday, a long line of TV trucks, lights and cameras are on the scene on Madison Avenue outside Mt. Sinai’s main entrance where fans inform WCBS TV CBS CH 2’s John Slattery that they pray for Rivers’ immediate recovery.

AGITATOR GOES AFTER REDSKINS OWNER Enough is enough! In 1932, George Preston Marshall forms National Football League team Boston Braves. In 1937 its name changes to the Washington Redskins. No American Indian ever says that the Washington Redskins name offends them. In fact, the Washington Redskins glorify the American Indians with their fight song, Hail to the Redskins. George Washington University professor John Banzhaf says the ‘R’ word is to Indians much like the ‘N’ word is to African Americans. He claims that he will file a challenge when Redskins owner Daniel Snyder renews their license. He says that he might even go after radio station licenses if the word ‘Redskins’ is used repeatedly on the air by announcers.
BROADCAST OWNER SAYS AM RADIO IS NOT DEAD How many times do we hear someone say that no one listens to AM radio anymore? WSRQ-1450 Sarasota, FL Talk station owner/GM Susan Nilon says: If these ‘predictions’ impact decision makers then they are not only short-sighted, but are foolish as well. AM radio is the future of radio! ..several decades earlier experts attributed the demise of movie theaters due to the advent of the video cassette recorder. Or slow death of vinyl records, due to the portability and popularity of compact disc. 30 years later US and Canada box office revenue in 2013 was $10.9 billion with 68% of the population in attendance…‘vinyl sales hit their highest level since at least 1991, with six million units sold’.
CHICKENMAN IS BACK! Do you remember in 1966 when Dick Orkin creates action radio series Chickenman that pokes fun at comic book heroes? Mild-mannered shoe salesman Benton Harbor attempts to fight crime and save the environment. Its series begins on Chicago, IL Top 40 powerhouse WCFL-1000. Popularity grows until we hear Chickenman on favorite radio stations all across America. Even though I’m a DJ on KHFI FM in Austin, TX, on Saturdays I feature a Chickenman marathon at noon on KHFI-970 with the exciting shows back-to-back. WCFL has a Voice of Labor Day Weekend with classic commercials, song intros and outros by radio giants Larry Lujack, Barney Pip, Big Ron O’Brien, Joel Sebastian, Clark Weber, Ron Britan plus the return of Chickenman.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What Bob Dylan song does psychedelic guitarist Jimi Hendrix record? The answer appears below.

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, From KILT, I went to KENR …don’t ask for dates : ) I worked with Hal McClain in the afternoons. Bill Bailey was doing mornings. I knew him but never anchored during his show. Hal was hanging around with Hank Williams Jr in those days. I often wondered if the two of them were ever sober. Hal —as you may recall –was a pilot and did stunt flying at air shows just for the fun of it. One day, it caught up with him. It was, I believe in San Antonio, when he smashed into the ground vertically. There was some speculation about that at the time but I never repeated it. It was officially called an ‘accident’. Your friend, Len

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Bermuda Radio Archive Network. Jim, thought you’d find this radio ‘small world’ story interesting. Written by Jim Richards, morning man at ZBM 2, the station we tried to compete with in Bermuda in the early 60’s… ZBM 1 and 2 were based on the BBC model and staffed by announcers from Britain’s possessions, Canada, Australia, and other English speaking countries, all well paid and professional. They wouldn’t hire me because I was an American, even for a part-time gig, so I ended up on the native station, ZFB, the only non-Bermudian, and as the newly minted Canadian Donnie Dare. The story Jim tells is true and almost too coincidental. Bermuda Radio Archive Network.
WYATT’S GROCERY STORES In 1958, I change my three Dallas Times Herald paper routes into a sacker/package out boy position at a Wyatt’s grocery store at the corner of South Beckley Avenue and Illinois Avenue for 50c an hour. Each year my pay increases: 50c, 75c, 90c and by the time that I become a senior at the brand new Kimball high school my pay reaches $1 an hour. Who will ever imagine that in just a short time I will become a radio announcer, DJ and newscaster on popular radio stations in my hometown Dallas, TX: WFAA-820, KBOX-1480 and KLIF-1190?
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Hi, I don’t remember the Wyatts Grocery Store; however; when growing up as a child my parents and I would eat the Wyatts Cafeteria in Lakewood. For a while they had a Wyatts that we liked in Pleasant Grove. My father would get their baked eggplant. Also in the 90’s there was a Wyatts at North Park. I understand from a Jeannie Stroup, someone I dated briefly they were Employee Owned. I remember a Buddy’s that was across the street from the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, but I am not sure if it is still there. I think Kroger bought the Buddy’s chain. Charles George, KC5RAI

GARY DELAUNE [ex KLIF-1190/CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: the way I see it… Hi Jim: From Dalhart to Devine, Angleton to Amarillo…it’s time for the National Sport of Texas; High school football. Having done 31 games on radio last fall, it is a labor of love because I sure haven’t lined the bank vault with money from major sponsors. But I am honored that on September 8th the NEISD School Board is recognizing me for what will be my 55th year to do high school play-by-play in Texas. It all began in September of 1960 at P.C. Cobb Stadium and one of the first games starred Jerry Rhome playing for his Dad at Sunset H.S. WFAA’s Bill Crowdus hired me to do news and football and from there, it was doing McKinney, Houston high schools and since 1971, San Antonio. We have 25 games slated this fall. I’ll never match Vin Sculley nor Chick Hearn but I’m not that old either. Take care Jim and visit me in the press box. GD (www.garydnews.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: On his third album, Jimi Hendrix records a powerful version of All Along the Watchtower, which is a song written and first recorded by folk singer Bob Dylan.
