IS RADIO DISNEY A SIGN OF THE FUTURE FOR RADIO? This week an announcement by Radio Disney shocks the radio airwaves. Radio Disney proclaims that it will sell 23 of its 24 radio stations in markets across the U.S. effective September 26, 2014. But just who is Radio Disney? Radio Disney is one of the world’s giant media companies who says we no longer need AM and FM stations because our listeners are digital. Wow! Radio Ink reports that Radio Disney claims they are selling off their AM and FM signals because they no longer need them, since only 18 percent of listening is coming through AM and FM. The rest is coming from digital or satellite. The evacuation list includes KMKI-620 in Dallas, TX suburb of Plano for $2 million.

WLS FM IS 0 FOR TWO In his search for a morning show on WLS FM in Chicago, IL Program Director Jan Jeffries attempts to hire former Chicago radio duo Eddie & Jobo but it falls apart. While current morning show host Brant Miller shifts to a lesser co-host role, Cumulus-owned WLS FM gives a tryout for a week to new morning show host, Jack Diamond. Even though Jack Diamond is behind the radio mic for many decades plus he sounds very good on the air, a few WLS FM insiders question the move. But, Diamond quickly wins over the staff. However, Jack Diamond proclaims on Friday afternoon that he is the new morning show host on Classic Hits XHPRS FM (105.7) in Tecate, Mexico which sends its signal to the San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico area.
DANNY MAC OFF WINDY CITY AIRWAVES Longtime Chicago, IL radio personality Dan McNeil runs into snags in his contract negotiations with WSCR-670 The Score. McNeil wants a huge pay increase plus he demands a move to afternoons, and plenty of time off. CBS Radio says No! to those desires. Radio Ink reports: After nearly two months of contract negotiations, McNeil refuses to agree to terms on a new deal. Listeners last hear McNeil on WSCR-670 on June 13, 2014. His contract expires on June 15th. The financial demands do not appear to be an issue, because CBS Radio already offers their highly-rated midday star a raise. What holds back negotiations is McNeil’s demand to return to PM Drive.
CLASSIC ROCK ARRIVES IN THE ALAMO CITY Recently, Classic Rock KZEP FM (104.5) San Antonio, TX downgrades to rim shot K227BH FM (93.3) which is a radio frequency that does not reach many parts of San Antonio. Cox relaunches their Classic Rock KTKX FM (X106.7) Terrell Hills as 106.7 The Eagle. KTKX FM bills itself as the only Classic Rock station heard throughout the Alamo City with their 100kW signal. KTKX FM Program Director Keith Hastings writes on the KTKX FM social page: In the past seven days, the landscape of Classic Rock Radio in San Antonio has changed remarkably. We’ve got a one hundred thousand watt transmitter with a powerful signal. You can hear it without static anywhere in and around San Antonio.

GARY JONES [ex KTRM-990] (Gainesville, FL) Howdy Jim! You probably don’t remember me as I worked the overnight shift at KTRM Beaumont, TX back in 1976. You worked AM drive, correct? I was roommates with Kent Fox for a while, he and Gary Powers worked mid-days and Henry LaRocca worked nights. I just don’t recall if you were doing morning or afternoons but I believe you did AM drive and were awesome! You had a lot of Dolly jokes as I recall. I would later work for Gene Dickerson again at KROK-KWKH in Shreveport and you and I may of worked together again at KPLX in Fort Worth. I also worked audio booth at Ch. 6 in Beaumont, did you do weather there on weekends? Those were fun days. I got out of radio in 1993 and now work at AT&T in Gainesville, Fl. Write back I’d love to hear from you! Gary Jones Aka Gary Bennett

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) I found this very interesting, appears the Classic Rock station in Tampa, FL, has a very tight playlist. Just as the oldies stations are no longer playing Elvis era stuff, looks like the Beatles and Stones are getting reduced spins, at least in most markets, or am I wrong. The Spotify research paradigm is incredible, and the future. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-classic-rock-isnt-what-it-used-to-be Led Zeppelin and Green Day both get played on classic rock radio stations, even though the bands made music in different decades.

JIM GOUGH [‘Mr. Texas’-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Jim…I can’t believe anyone who grew up in Texas doesn’t know about Bob Wills. He created Western Swing in the 1930’s when he played with the Lightcrust Doughboys in Fort Worth. All of us that play that kind of real Texas Music were and still are big Wills’ fans! I saw his great band first at the old Dessau Hall near Austin in 1948. One of his best steel guitar players is my friend Herb Remington from Houston. Best, Jim Gough
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: The Doorbell. This clip is only 1 minute!! Please watch. The Doorbell. This is an eye opener! PowerLineBlog” recently held a competition for $100,000 for whomever could most effectively and creatively dramatize the significance of the federal debt crisis. Several entries have gotten a lot of attention, but the one that has gone most viral so far is ‘The Doorbell.’ If you haven’t yet seen it, you may watch it here. It’s 59 seconds long: www.ntrc.info/doorbell.html. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote. — Benjamin Franklin
TRIVIA ANSWER: Guitarist Ted Nugent claims that he takes the name Amboy Dukes from a Detroit, MI group who just breaks up and begins to use it for his new Chicago, IL band. However, The Amboy Dukes is actually the name of a novel about gang members and their lifestyle. In later interviews, Nugent claims that although many people hand him a copy of the book, he never reads it.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I don’t feel any different at 61. I have been noticing some ducting on FM was getting Shreveport on 89.9. DXing FM is harder with all the rim shots now in the area. Best regards, Charles George, KC5RAI P. S. When I attended SFA it was fun since I could get FM stations from Dallas, Houston, and Shreveport. I sometimes got a different station just by moving the antenna on my radio.
