HOUSTON, TX OLDEST BLACK RADIO IN TURMOIL KCOH-1230 which bills itself as the oldest black-formatted radio station in Texas flips its six decade old daytime only 1430 kHz dial position to full time 1230 kHz (originally KNUZ-1230 begins on February 18, 1948). Houston Chronicle reports that when KCOH-1230 GM Jesse Dunn does not repay a loan, Houston Mayoral candidate Ben Hall who already airs ads for his 2015 campaign, has an option to buy its land and building at 5011 Almeda with its looking glass studio. But KCOH-1230 assets are in receivership from multiple debtors, plus a judge rules that Dunn has an admitted practice of immediately converting corporate assets to untraceable cash.

JEFF THOMPSON [NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefeller Plaza] (Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: A major part of my career was in Houston, but I now read you from NC. Jeff Thompson here, Jim, in Clemmons, NC…a suburb of Winston-Salem. As you may remember, I’m originally a Texan, from the little town of Mexia, 40 miles east of Waco. I started my radio & TV career in Austin, while attending Univ. of TX, then to KXYZ in Houston. Shortly after human space flight began in the early 60’s, I was asked to build, program & manage KMSC Radio, adjacent to NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, (now JSC.) From there I was hired to host and produce a “first of its kind” pioneering Business/Stock Market show 6 hours a day on KVVV-TV, Ch 16 in Alvin, which led to my transfer to New York City, doing the same show on Times Square at WOR-TV, Ch. 9 (now located in New Jersey.) After that, it was on to WINS, 1010, all news radio, followed by anchoring NBC Radio Network News as well as TV reporting from 30 Rockefeller Center. After that, over to Madison Avenue, as EVP of Hill & Knowlton, then the world’s largest PR firm…which in turn, resulted in my moving ALL the way down here, to North Carolina, to assist in building & running a major PR firm in Winston-Salem. All the best, Jeff Thompson

JEFF MACK [McClain-KULF/KILT FM/KENR/WNOE/WYYN/KNUZ] (Cleveland, TX) Here’s one for the record books. By the time I graduated from high school, Bob (White) was gone and a new PD by the name of Bill Young from Waco was running the ship. My dream of working at KILT-AM never happened, but I was very fortunate to work for other great stations like, KULF, KILT-FM, KENR, WNOE, WYYN, KNUZ and others during 25 years of my radio career. I never had a day I couldn’t wait to get to work. I loved every minute of it. I really miss the people I worked as much as the business itself. I worked with some great talents through the years and learned a lot from each and everyone of them. In 1988 I left my last radio job at KNUZ and became self employed in a small video production business. I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize the inside of a control room any more. Gotta say, it would be fun just to fall back in time and run a few sets on the radio playing a little Rock N Roll! Keep up the great work my friend, Jeff “Mack” McClain
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution. Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
JACK PARNELL [former WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Where is radio headed? That’s been awhile back, Jim (August 16, 1977). At that time Skip Wilkerson and I had our studio going full blast, working 7 days a week, sometimes 15 hours a day! So, you really were in Houston when Jay made his mark there, and Gannett tapped him for President, moving him to L.A. I called him about a week after he got there, and asked him how the big chair felt. He said “I’m not so sure…you know me, I always liked getting my hands dirty in this business, and this is just like running a big office”. I loved every minute I did of radio, but as I tell Scott Segraves (we stay in close touch), at about age 35 or so, I began wondering if that’s what I wanted to be doing when I was 50…things were changing and I thought it was nearing time for me to make my exit…I guess I grew up…while radio grew down! JP
