ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
MID-MICHIGAN NEWS DEAN EXPIRES While he attends law school, Les Root is a newscaster on WFDF-910. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, who Les hires as a news reporter in 1977 remembers: We used to call him the dean of Mid-Michigan newsmen . He was a throwback news guy who would make all the calls to police and fire departments in the morning, write his own news, edit the wire, and put together a newscast on the hour and the half-hour. On Monday, December 8, 2014 Les Root dies at 75 just five years after he signs off the air for the final time.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: WHBQ. Dunno if I told you, but there are some of us older WHBQ alumni who are working hard trying to get the WHBQ studios who were in the Chisca Hotel here in Memphis, built into a museum. It’s known worldwide as the place where rock ‘n roll began…July 8, 1954, Dewey Phillips played the very first Elvis record for the very first time anywhere! The song was “That’s Alright Mama”, and the studios where he played that record are actually still intact, except for the equipment, and the Chisca Hotel is now being rejuvenated as condos. Wink Martindale and George Klein were present when that historic even took place. I worked at WHBQ, in the Chisca from 1958 to 1863, the year we build completely new studios at 485 S. Highland in Memphis. WHBQ is now owned by Dr. George S. Flinn, along with many other radio & TV stations in Memphis and around the country. There is a strong possibility that the equipment used may still be in the WHBQ transmitter building. If so, the WHBQ museum could be put back together as it was then! Keep your fingers crossed that we’ll be able to get the permission and funding to accomplish just that.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1942, WNEW-1130 NYC sets the standard for radio news coverage. Observers believe WNEW-1130 is the first radio station to break for hourly newscasts put together by the Daily News broadcast desk. In 1958, WNEW-1130 has its own homegrown news department with 13 reporters. Soon, that number more than doubles in size. When we view today’s news-stingy radio times, that move is quite dramatic. WNEW-1130’s own reporters Reid Collins, Ike Pappas, Edward Brown and Jim Gordon journey to Africa, roam the South, broadcast from Vatican Square and Cape Canaveral with their news updates on the hour and half-hour. In the dumbing down of America, today’s music radio totally eliminates news coverage in favor of witless guano.
TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Just wanted to say hi to you and Suzie, and I hope things are going well.
LAURYN HILL (May 26, 1975 – p) Everything is everything. What is meant to be, will be. After winter, must come spring. Everything is everything.
