ROSCO’S SQUAD CAR RUNS PLUMB OUT OF GAS Actor James Best, who in six decades of television we know him best (pardon the pun) for his starring role as the bumbling Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in CBS TV series The Dukes of Hazzard that airs from 1979 – 1985. We also remember James as Jim Lindsey in The Andy Griffith Show. James Best who is born on July 26, 1926 in Powderly, KY passes away at 88 on Monday evening April 6, 2015 in Hickory, NC.

THE DRAGONET RESTS IN PEACE One of the 1950s most innovative radio voices is Stan Freberg. Our most favorite Stan Freberg is his 1953 Capitol records single St. George & The Dragonet that pokes fun at Jack Webb in Dragnet, which is another of our favorites. Variety says Stan Freberg started voicing Warner Bros. cartoons as soon as he graduated from high school. Creative genius Stan Freberg born Stanley Friberg on August 7, 1926 in Pasadena, CA dies of pneumonia at 88 on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 in Santa Monica, CA.
JONI LOOKS AT BOTH SIDES NOW Born on November 7, 1943 singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell at 71 is just 9 days older than this writer. Since the 1960s the eight-time Grammy winner pens many tunes but her very own song Both Sides Now stands the test of time. Others who record her tunes include Judy Collins (1967), Frank Sinatra (1968), Neil Diamond (1969) and Glen Campbell (1970). Last week, she is found unconscious in her Los Angeles home. Joni Mitchell rests comfortably in the hospital of an undisclosed illness.
AEROSMITH GOES COUNTRY Ramp reports that during a surprise appearance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, Aerosmith superstar frontman Steven Tyler meets with BMLG President & CEO Scott Borchetta to sign with Dot Records for a solo album. Tyler sighs: My earliest influences put me somewhere between the Everly Brothers and the Carter Family and this project is all about me paying homage to my Country roots. Borchetta brags: I have never met a more passionate human being than Steven.
NEWS TALK RADIO STILL ALIVE AND WELL What is today’s most popular radio format? It may be a surprise to many but News/Talk Radio is not dead. In 2014, Harker Research searches for radio’s biggest format winners and losers. While Nielsen relies on PPM scores, Harker says there is a better way to determine format success. In a ranking of all formats by the percentage of stations that gain share, 52% of News/Talk stations are up, 56% of Sports/Talk stations are up, plus News stations are up a robust 59%.

BOB EDWARDS [Blade Parker-ex KILT-610, KNUZ-1230] (Houston, TX) Subject: Ben Harold. Hi Jim, Looks like I am writing a little late for Monday’s issue. However, I wanted to give you a status report on our good friend Ben Harold. As you know, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and his situation looked bleak. Well, he fought back with chemo and radiation therapy until the docs were satisfied with the results. Last Tuesday, he went under the knife so that the remaining malignancy could be removed. I spoke to Ben several times last week and he was is very good spirits and he wanted me to tell you that everyone’s prayers worked! He came out of the surgery very well and the doctors indicated that they were able to remove all of the cancer and he should be back home this week to finish his recovery. Ben asks that all continue prayers that he gets final confirmation that he is and will remain cancer free. Ben says that he and Becky are planning a trip to Houston just as soon as he gets back on this feet and looks forward to visiting with some of his ol’ friends. Best, Bob

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) I thought about the folks in that town watching the preparations for the greatest invasion in military history, what they must have been thinking and how the military and government kept the lid on. There were German spies all over the island. Slide the curser across the photo from left to right. (http://interactive.guim.co.uk/embed/2014/apr/image-opacity-slider-master/index.html?ww2-dday) Btw, if you haven’t checked out my blog yet, (URL in sig) please do…I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, especially those interested in the history of the Pop Culture in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Appreciate all comments. www.thedonrocks.com / www.facebook.com/OfficialTheDonRocksPage Twitter: Don Sundeen@TheRealDonRocks
IRA [Eye] LIPSON [ex PD AOR KZEW FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Looking for Mike Taylor. We’ve got a Zoo reunion coming up for the Zoo Crew at KZEW in Dallas and we are trying to track down Mike Taylor. Mike was one if the original jocks when we signed on in 1973. He went on to be a record rep for A&M and returned to do sales at the Zoo in the 80s before disappearing off the face of the earth. If anyone knows how to reach Mike or has any clues please let me know. Ira “Eye” Lipson; Zoologist-in-Exile
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 24. 1932 the first Radio transmission from a moving train happens when Belle Baker hosts a radio variety program on WABC-770.
TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: AFTRA. During the AFTRA strike, the PD Rick Sklar did the news on WABC on at least one newscast. ABC management tried to turn a frog into a prince by announcing on the air that all their favorite air personalities were outside the building, and you could go meet and talk with them right now. So people did go meet the DJs. http://musicradio77.com/strikebound.html
JONI MITCHELL (November 7, 1943 – p) I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way.
