FREE BIRD FLIES AWAY On October 20, 1977, on their flight from Greenville, SC to Baton Rouge, LA three members of Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd perish when their Convair CV-300 chartered plane runs out of fuel and crashes in Gillsburg, MS and kills six people including lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant, plus guitarist Steve Gaines. Georgia State Patrol confirms that founding drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Burns Jr., dies Friday night, April 3, 2015 when his 1995 Buick Roadmaster whirls off the road and strikes a tree.
FCC’S NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN The radio industry is upset that FCC’s new Chairman Tom Wheeler vows to turn out the lights at 16 of its current 24 field offices. Tom replies: It has been 20 years since the FCC assessed its field operations. What about the rise in pirate radio programming? Like a military commander, Wheeler counters: There will be more boots on the ground in the areas of greatest challenge. More agents in Miami and New York City to fight pirates. Is this the end of surprise inspections of radio stations?
NJ ATTACKS PIRATE RADIO Newly appointed FCC Commissioner Mike O’Rielly advocates direct action by radio stations against pirate radio. After a complaint from Townsquare Talk/Classic Hits WKXW FM (101.5) Trenton, NJ cops bust a pirate radio station that operates on 101.3 which interferes with WKXW FM’s 101.5 spot. Linden police remove the pirate’s antenna because New Jersey state law allows local officials to move swiftly against an unlicensed operator.

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Many people enjoy JRRR as I do. But many people do not show appreciation for the things that give them joy. They live as if they will live forever … as if they are immortal. One can learn from the past, but the past is gone. One can plan for the future, but the future may never arrive. All one has is the present. When you know your life will end, sadly for some people, it is the first time they live in the present … day by day. Many turn their backs to people in need … even friends. Many talk the talk, but fail to walk the walk. Christ did not teach us to help with only words. Action is what is required whenever someone has the means to help. Helping others in need is the only true path to happiness. Tony

TRIVIA ANSWER: Mel Blanc who receives his high school education in Portland, OR joins the nationally famous Hoot Owls 2-1/2 hour variety show on KGW-620 in 1927 with over one million listeners. In 1935 Mel Blanc moves to Hollywood, CA. We remember Mel Blanc as the brilliant voice of Warner Brothers cartoon characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepé Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, Wile E. Coyote, the Tasmanian Devil plus many other characters.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Bob Shannon asks 20 Questions of, Ira ‘Eye’ Lipson, creator and programmer of the great Dallas, ‘Underground,’ radio station, KZEW, (‘The Zoo’) that is currently celebrating its birth 42 years ago and fondly remembered by folks who loved it. Lipson took advantage of the emerging FM band and the hip music available on long playing records, to create something very different from similar stations of the day. The Zoo reflected the emerging youth culture with laid-back jocks playing a wide variety of music. The branding of the Zoo was brilliant, listeners were: ‘Zoo Freaks,’ proudly displaying the Elephant Radio logo on the cars and vans they drove to Zoo events: large gatherings for community charities, and Lipson’s greatest idea, ‘Zoo World:’ a weekend showcase of lifestyle choices and live music that drew huge crowds. In the TDR piece, Shannon asks Lipson thoughtful questions about creating The Zoo, his life, careers and memories. The answers are interesting and sometimes surprising, please check it out.
