JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Phil Parr Has Passed. Jim, It is with great sadness that I report the passing of a true Texas radio legend. Phil Parr died on Wednesday April 22nd in Lufkin. He was 74 years old, born October 12, 1940, in St. Louis Missouri, but lived most of his life in Texas. Phil was the most incredibly talented and creative radio man I ever knew, despite being blind from birth. He was also a very talented singer and musician, and wrote a number of songs. I got to know him while working at KSPL AM/FM in Diboll-Lufkin in the early 80s, and I can testify that there was nothing he couldn’t do. A master DJ and broadcast engineer, he could build you a radio station from the ground up, complete with all the electronics. I will refer you to his website where he tells his life story in his own words. (www.philparr.net/about_me) Please check it out. He was a most remarkable man. Texas radio has lost one of its greatest. Jim Bell Lufkin

DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) I think it was around Noon – on Sunday I found it (JRRR) in my mailbox…and read it. I check e-mail – all different times of the day. I have written e-mails at 3am in the morning…If I can’t sleep and I am up listening to Coast to Coast or WABC radio NYC and working some electronic equipment, YOU just never know. Dave
TRIVIA ANSWER: WEW-770 St. Louis, MO is the oldest radio station west of the Mississippi. Its license begins in April 1921, just weeks after KDKA-1020 Pittsburgh, PA on November 2, 1920. In 1912, Saint Louis University establishes 9YK with the Morse code to communicate seismological and weather information. WEW-770 audio transmissions begin at 10:05 am on April 26, 1921 as the first radio station to broadcast weather news and forecasts. WEW-770’s signal protects clear-channel 50,000 watt WABC-770 in NYC.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Yes the KLIF (1190) building is still there, for a while The Dallas Observer was there but it has offices at Oaklawn and Maple across from the Scottish Rite. I think a Real Estate Agency uses the old KLIF building. Cumulus has offices and studios near American Airlines Arena. Charles George
JERRY LEE LEWIS (Green, Green Grass of Home) The old house is still standing, tho’ the paint is cracked and dry.
