WFAA TV EYEWITNESS GARLAND SHOOTING Jobin Panicker at Curtis Culwell Center: Nearly 6 hours after incident and I can now leave. Overhearing Officer. This was a direct attack, they (suspects) were ready to go. Ppl evacuated singing patriotic songs. Hearing the two suspects had AK-47s. This is NOT confirmed. As we were outside heard 3 to 4 shots. After lots of yelling. Ten seconds later heard a lot more gunfire. Hearing that an officer was shot. Two suspects shot. Everyone here on their phones. Two women in tears.
YOUNG AMERICANS DO NOT TRUST MEDIA A recent Harvard University survey indicates that younger Americans do not trust the media. In the Institute of Politics poll among 3,000 young people between 18-29 only 12% say they trust local media. While 88% say they sometimes or never trust the media, only 12% say they trust local media. Just 2% say they trust the media to do the right thing all of the time – 39% say they never trust the media. Former NBC anchor Brian Williams’ phoniness is a prime example of this distrust.

ROBERT MILLER [Eastern Michigan University Professor] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Hi Jim and Suzie! Having grown up near Fredericksburg road and Babcock in San Antonio I remember the Tip Top for chicken fried steaks. My thanks to Robert Reyes and the best TV newsman San Antonio ever had, Tom Ellis, for reminding of the place. It was REALLY nice they both, independently, picked the same place! I’ll file a story after we get back! Both Tom Ellis and Robert Reyes have a lot of SA credibility. Finally, thank you for spreading the word! Went out to Bandera yesterday and that is one fine little town. They had a couple of guys our age playing at Arkey Blues and a nice gal waltzing the tip jar around the patrons. God, I love this place. Bob
JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Mornin’ Jim: Back in the 80s, I used to go to Nashville every year and do the backstage announcer on the National Arthritis Telethon and Mickey Gilley, Jerry Lee’s first cousin was a co-host. One of the performers that was scheduled hadn’t made it yet when it came time for her to go on, so the producer sort of panicked about what we could do to fill the time. Gilley heard what was going on, so he yelled: “roll the white piano in the center”. The crew did, he walked out, sat down on the bench, camera came on, and he looked straight into the camera and said: “Eat your heart out, Jerry Lee”. He did every hit that Jerry Lee had, complete with all the great piano licks and runs…in some cases even better than the Killer! JP

RANDY KENDRICK [Senior Product Manager – ACN] (Centennial, CO) Subject: New Endeavor. Hi Jim, Hoping you are doing well, old friend (and that is meant in the kindest sense). I have decided to get some great people together for a new programming source. I have launched an online radio station that is going to get a Part 15 Low Power transmitter later in the year. Our format is an attempt to bring back radio the way it was; that meaning that we have brought together broadcast professionals to build a radio station that plays all the music we love, regardless of genre. We also run old time radio shows like Dragnet, Johnny Dollar, X-Minus-One, Gunsmoke, etc. from midnight to 3 am nightly. Weekends are reserved for the new specialty programs we are broadcasting. So much more on the way, but I invite you and your readers to give us a try, bearing in mind, we are still in beta test mode. iTunes Radio is coming soon. Tonight, Mark Robertson will give an entertaining and educational look back at the Celtic roots of American music. Then I will run my Classic Country Hour. It all starts at 7PM Mountain Daylight Time. Stream it from kwkxradio.com. Best regards, Randy Kendrick, Centennial, Colorado WTBO, KULF, KTRH, among others. And of course, now KWKX.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Rare Earth is the first all-white band that Motown Records signs. A white boy from a red-brick row house in Detroit, MI climbs his way out of the sooty, blue-collar jungle of factory workers to the big time glitz and glam of the Rock world. Rock Singer Peter Rivera original lead singer and drummer of legendary band Rare Earth’s Classic songs I Just Want to Celebrate and Get Ready. Rare Earth sells more than 25 million records – five top 10 singles, seven Gold, one Double-Platinum and two Platinum albums.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Luau Larry and The Sandcrabs. I went Friday night and heard Luau Larry and the Sandcrabs at the Goat. The put on a very good show of Blues, Rock, and Soul Music. Also I went the week before to Urban Vines on Garland Road and heard John A. Lewis doing his own tunes. The Urban Vines has a very good Ravioli that I would recommend to others. There is a lot of good music not heard on the local stations. However; I have decided it is easier to complain than to get up and go catch the bus to hear local music. I also enjoy the Sunday Jazz Lunch at the Freeman on Commerce. When going home I usually catch the 110 or 111, they stop in front of what once was a radio station on Commerce. (KLIF-1190 2120 Commerce Street) At night have been getting very good signals from Radio Encyclopedia, La Habana, Cuba with Jazz, Classical, and Salsa on 530 KHz. Charles George, KC5RAI
LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY (November 30, 1874 – April 24, 1942) Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
