ONE OF THE THREE BELLS GOES SILENT In 1969, during a remote broadcast on KBUC FM/AM in front of San Antonio, TX’s own Golden Stallion I look up and see its star attraction for the evening, Jim Ed Brown, racing by at the helm of his large bus. In August 1959, Jim Ed Brown, plus his sisters Maxine and Bonnie [The Browns] top the charts with their smash hit The Three Bells. In 1967 comes his signature hit Pop a Top. Country singer and genuine nice guy Jim Ed Brown dies at 81 of lung cancer on Thursday, June 11, 2015.

BIG D INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER CALLS IT QUITS Just before her 25th anniversary, longtime KDFW TV FOX CH 4 Dallas, TX Investigative Reporter Becky Oliver retires. In front of the camera, she shoves her microphone into the faces of scammers, felons and corrupt government officials with tough questions. At home, she is a mother of six. For the past 25 years, she and her husband buy and sell real estate. We flip houses. We rent houses. For several years, she wants to get her real estate license but never has the time.
TV STATION FIRES ANCHOR DOGGIE In January 2015, 9-year-old Cockapoo, Nell, joins the Good Morning Connecticut family on WTNH TV ABC CH 8 New Haven from 5-7 am every morning. Nell’s tail wag and smile each morning makes her TV debut so delightful. www.FTVLive.com reports that WTNH TV decides to go in another direction and removes the lovable doggie Nell from its set. Former TV anchor doggie Nell sighs: I’ll still post about dog-related stories on Twitter and Instagram @AnchorDogNell. Love and licks.

MIKE KELLAM [ex KHFI FM/KHFI-970, NBC WMAQ-670] (Estes Park, CO) Subject: Remember J.C. Kellam? Hi, Jim! In 1971, when I worked at KNOW, I bought a Lincoln and put the “KELLAM” plates on it. Then, I REALLY got the questions. One day, I was in Oak Hill, and blew a radiator hose. While parked in a parking lot, J. C. Kellam drove up and introduced himself to me and we chatted for awhile. We discussed family and I told him that my grandfather Kellam was from Virginia. He said that his grandfather Kellam was also from Virginia. Since the Kellams in Virginia are a fairly small clan, it is likely that we were related somehow. Some years later, when I had moved into the real estate business, I was flagged down on Highway 183, somewhere near Cedar Park, by a woman who said she was J. C.’s daughter. By that time, he had passed on, and she wanted to talk about family too. I related to her my meeting with J. C. in Oak Hill and chatted with her a bit. She thanked me and drove on, and I never saw her again. It’s a small world. Mike Kellam
ROBERT TINDLE [Radio Engineering Professional] (Tyler-Lufkin, TX) With those 16 inch turntables we used to start the turntable BEFORE we started the Shotgun jingle. Right after we got the 12 inch turntables I started putting 1 precision layer of rubber tape on the motor spindle which gave us + 1.2 % faster. It did not really sound faster but made the other stations sound like they were dragging. I would change the tape daily to minimize any rumble. That was really wanting it and using what we had to get it. We copied the “Bill Young KILT” COMMERCIAL labels to play the voice only ones first in the stopset and build up to spots with musical jingles. Oh and yes then Never play 2 females back to back. So our songs were ” sweets” and “” ups” and we could not play 2 sweets in a row. We thought some stations like I believe it was KXOL that for a while did Not talk into stopsets were just WRONG! We put so much into the product that most newer radio people today would not likely understand some of these concepts. Thanks Jim, Robert Tindle

BUD BUSCHARDT [ex Director WFAA TV / ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Thanks. Jim, Didn’t expect you to print the whole Jack Grady obit. Thanks. I think many old jocks will relate to the Elvis story. We never knew who might be listening to us and call in. I could drop a bunch of famous names who called our request line, hot line or office at ABC. Thanks again. Bud
