GARY DELAUNE [ex KLIF-1190/KRLD-1080 news/KENS TV CH 5 Sports Director] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio July 13, 2015 [Monday] Issue #1424 Jim: I don’t know if anyone informed you about the death of Roy Nichols. I had tried for weeks to reach him in Dallas and finally talked with his son Breck. Roy died January 24th which was by coincidence, the same day I underwent my triple by-pass surgery. He was a great newsman with a tremendous voice with years on the air in Little Rock and Dallas. (KLIF and KRLD) He and Joe Long nurtured me through my early days at KLIF (1960-1965) Roy and I moved to KRLD-TV the same day in ‘65. He was also a veteran-hero of the battle of Okinawa. He had been in failing health for several years but did a good job during the JFK specials of 2013, particularly for a TV group from London. Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)

JAY WALKER [KJKK FM 100.3/KTSA-550 KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod] (Dallas/McKinney, TX) Subject: Radio Killed Radio. When I worked for Doubleday and Gary Stevens in Denver we were lucky as he was a programmer and talent before he became a VP. He was of the mindset that if you raise the rates, you could cut spots. It worked. We beat KIMN and that was an achievement since KIMN was a power house. In the 70’s at KBEQ we beat WHB in ONE book with that strategy. But you’re right, it takes a GM and SM with real balls to look long-term. Usually they are tightly focused on making the monthly sales goal and to hell with the product. I was lucky to work for Ed Wodka in Dallas another SMART GM who considered the long-term effects on the product as well. Joel Folger, Jimmy Steal, and I managed to beat Buzz Bennett when Ginsburg brought everything he had to Y-95 Dallas. By the way has anyone heard from Buzzy in the last 20 years? He just dropped off the face of the planet… Jay
TRIVIA ANSWER: We find the answer in our friend Don Barrett’s www.LARADIOcom Web site. While in college, Bob Lewis is on WTRY-980 Troy, NY for $100 a month. When he lands on WNEW-1130 New York City he notices many Bob Lewises on the air, so he adds the Q to set himself apart from the others. In the 1950s and ’60s, we remember Robert Q Lewis as a panelist on popular TV quiz shows: What’s My Line, To Tell the Truth and Call My Bluff. On December 11, 1991, Robert Q Lewis dies at 71 in a hospital in Los Angeles, CA.
JAMES MARVELL [Mercy lead singer – ‘Love Can Make You Happy’ 1969] (Brandon-Tampa, FL) Hello Jim, I remember doing interviews with KIKK in Houston, KNUZ, WBAP (Bill Mack in Ft Worth) KBUC and KKYX in San Antone ( San Antonio Texas with Jerry King and Max Gardner ) and dozens more radio stations all over Texas. I have articles from Billboard acknowledging my trendsetting duo. Willie Nelson also placed The Country Cavaleers’ exhibit in his museums during the 90s both in Branson and Nashville. We were ahead of our time with our look is what many in the industry use to say but we still went on our Cavalier way doing what we loved and visiting radio stations everywhere….Here’s a video where I recently did an interview with CMA Hall Of Fame DJ Billy Parker in Tulsa Oklahoma – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJQlYu6VZFY and https://youtu.be/KJQlYu6VZFY My best to you and Suzie, James Marvell formerly of Mercy and The Country Cavaleers
WYATT EARP (March 19, 1848 – January 13, 1929) Fast is good, but accurate is final.
