[Gentleman] JIM CARTER [KCBQ-1170/KNUS FM/WFAA-570/KONO-860/KLIF-1190/KXOL-1360] (San Antonio, TX) Johnny Shannon devoted his life to radio and passed away on October 26, 2015. For 50 years Johnny worked in New York City, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and other cities. Johnny’s production skills are legendary. He was known as the “surgeon general” in the operating room, (production room)…Johnny was also known as “Solid Gold” Shannon because his work on the air was sterling, Johnny was beloved and respected by all who knew him. He was the consummate gentleman. Unfortunately Johnny didn’t have a burial policy or life insurance. The memorial service will cost $7,000 and prayerfully will be held at the Sunset Funeral Home on Austin Highway when the funds are available. Johnny was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2010 and into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame in 2015. Anything you can do to help with the funeral expenses will very much appreciated. The monies raised will go to Johnny’s son, John Wayne Shannon Jr. who will provide the funeral home with the necessary expenses. In advance, thank you for anything you can do to provide Johnny “Solid Gold” Shannon with the kind of send off he so richly deserves. LIZ PATRANELLA [Liz Houston – KTSA-550, KBAT-680] (Austin, TX) Subject: Johnny Shannon Services. Hello, Everyone, I have been speaking with Gentleman Jim Carter, who is generously giving his time and assistance to Johnny Shannon’s son during this difficult time. For anyone who missed it, Johnny passed away in his sleep Monday morning after a long battle with liver cancer. Yes, many of us were not even aware of his struggle … as he kept it mostly to himself in that quiet, unassuming way of his. Because Johnny had no life or burial insurance, his son, John Jr., is in need of some assistance to pay for basic funeral arrangements. After much discussion and careful consideration, he has determined he needs $2500 to take care of his dad and give him a meaningful memorial service. A website has been set up where you can make donations … many of you already have (and thank you all for your generosity). Donations have currently reached $1,450. Please give what you can if you are so moved. Even small dollar amounts will help. To donate, go to: https://www.gofundme.com/dz7c2yxw And, if anyone reading this knows people at KTSA, please ask them to consider doing the same (I don’t have any emails for the current employees who worked with Johnny). The Memorial Service for Johnny has been moved from November 14 so that it will not conflict with the Texas Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony being held that day in Austin. The service is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at 11:00 am at Medical Center Baptist Church, 7015 Wurzbach Road. Thank you all for your support of the Shannon family at this time. We’ll miss you, Johnny! Liz

JAY WEST [KILT-610/KODA FM/KRIO-910] (Houston, TX) Subject: Johnny Shannon. Jim, When did Johnny Shannon work at KILT? Seems to me there was a Johnny Shannon on the air at KILT when I first went to work there in late 1971. Could this be the same JS whom you wrote about in the current newsletter??? If it was, he worked mid days I believe, and left shortly after I started in December, ’71. I replaced Rick Shaw. I remember him as low key, and extremely courteous. Thanks Jim for your responses, and am sorry to hear of his passing!!! Regards, Jay West
