ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
ROCK SINGER’S WORLD ENDS In 1967, Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron form Rock group Three Dog Night from Australian slang for really cold weather. From late 1960s to mid 1970s, they amass many popular tunes: One [#5-1969], Mama Told Me [#1-1970], Joy to the World [#1-1971], Liar [#7-1971], An Old Fashioned Love Song [#4-1971], Never Been to Spain [#1-1972], plus our very favorite tune Til the World Ends [#32-1975]. On October 20, 2015 Cory Wells dies in his sleep at 74 at home in Dunkirk, NY.

THE LAST BIG BROADCAST From the 1950’s to the mid-70s Ed Walker plus his then radio partner Willard Scott are The Joy Boys first on WRC-980 and later on WWDC-1260. Willard goes on to become a media superstar weatherman on NBC TV’s Today Show. For the past quarter century, Ed Walker hosts The Big Broadcast on WAMU FM (88.5) Washington. Due to deteriorating health, cancer causes the 83-year old Ed Walker’s final program to air this Sunday night, October 25, 2015 at 7pm (ET) on WAMU FM.
FCC STREAMLINES FOREIGN OWNERSHIP OF RADIO STATIONS The FCC proposes to allow foreign ownership up to 25 percent for any FCC license as stated in the Communications Act of 1996. The NAB applauds the FCC for opening a rulemaking exploring opportunities for easing foreign investment in local radio and TV stations. Oh yes! We must bring in foreign investment in America’s radio and TV outlets! How soon is it before America’s ship finally sinks?
KTAR FM MORNING SHOW CHANGES When Arizona Broadcasting Hall of Fame Ned Foster retires after 27 years and co-host Connie Weber exits KTAR FM after 10 years, longtime Phoenix radio veteran Jim Sharpe and award-winning news anchor Jayme West team-up as new hosts on KTAR FM Arizona’s Morning News. Bonneville Phoenix VP/Content Ryan Hatch brags: With more than 40 years of combined local news experience, Jim and Jayne are the perfect pair to move Arizona’s Morning News forward.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the only song of the Rock Era that reaches #1 twice? The answer appears below.

NICK ALEXANDER [KVIL, KLIF, KXOL] (Quinlan, TX) Subject: Anniversary. October 25 is the 10th anniversary of the passing of radio giant Michael Spears. Michael began his career with a station in his house that transmitted all the way to the end of the block! His first real gig was at KAND in Corsicana, followed by a stop at KDOK in Tyler. From there it was on to KLIF the mighty 1190 as “Hal Martin”. Stops after that included “The Big 8, CKLW” Detroit/Windsor, a brief stop in San Diego at KGB, then as Program Director of WYSL Buffalo. He returned to Dallas in ’72 to PD KNUS, where, along with an all-star staff beat KLIF-AM, the first FM station to do so. From there it was on to KFRC San Francisco where he won Billboard Magazine’s programmer of the year award. Next was KHJ Los Angeles and then on to Florida as co-owner of WPLP Tampa/St. Petersburg where he won his 2nd Billboard Programming award in the News/Talk format. Next stop: back to Dallas to program KKDA-FM making it the number one station in Dallas. He won a third Billboard Magazine as Urban Program Director of the year. Chicago was next and then finally back to Dallas for his final radio job as Program Director of KRLD and the Texas State Network. Michael gave many people their start in the business, including me, and will be remembered by all those whose lives he touched. Check my Facebook page for a couple of pictures. TRIVIA ANSWER: On October 22, 1961 Chubby Checker performs The Twist and Let’s Twist Again on The Ed Sullivan Show. Both tunes receive renewed radio airplay despite already being hits. Remarkably, The Twist zooms all the way to #1 again and becomes the only song of the Rock Era that reaches #1 twice.
JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Good songs, great music. Good morning Jim and Suzie, I know that the ‘Music of Your Life’ formats have come and gone on AM, however from my experience in Dallas with this format, some AM owners should ponder this type of music and delivery style rather than yet another Spanish EPSN placeholder or 5th tier squawker… My best to you as always. Jay Walker
