DAVE MICHAELS [former WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Ray Scott WNOP-740. When I was a bus-boy at a Steak House & Lounge I met a DJ – announcer. I asked him about Career Academy and he was not in favor of that. I was 15 1/2 years old. Had to get a work permit signed by parents to work there. His name was Ray Scott. Ray suggested I go to University of Cincinnati – BA in Radio & TV. Did not have the money for that! Ray worked at Radio Free Newport, KY on 740 AM at 1000 watts. It was a Jazz station. Ray later became PD. I moved on from the bus-boy job to go to Elkins in Dallas, TX and a few stations in Tenn and Ohio doing everything I could to learn the business. Ray was married to lady named Jean. He later died in his 80s with dementia. Very sad. Dave Michaels

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Bob White; You and I are the only survivors from the old 610 crew. Bob (Presley) went into sales early in his time at KILT. He did mid-day on the air, but went into sales after about two years on the air at KILT. Chuck
BOB WHITE [ex Top 40 KILT-610 DJ] (Corpus Christi, TX) Subject: Bob Presley. Chucky: I am devastated. Bob was such a good friend and such a pleasure to work with. As the years have passed I have seen the “old KILT 610 Goody Guys” dwindle one by one. I guess Rob McLeod was the first to go then one by one. I hope you and I can stay close as you were, are and always shall be very special to me. Please let me know about the funeral services and I will do my very best to be there. Bob

FR BOB TOMLINSON [ex KXYL-1240, KIOX-1270] (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Subject: I Was A DJ When DJs Jocked Discs… And I Don’t Mean CDs – Hi Jim. When I left KXYL Brownwood and radio in 1983, I left country music behind. Frankly I just can’t listen to it anymore. Every now and then a single song pops up that I like but to listen all day would set my nerves on edge I think. Yes I played country for most of my career but I could not go back to that ever again. 60’s TOP 40 and some Christian music is what I most enjoy. Hope the New Year has started well for you and Suzie, Bob Tomlinson
TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 14, 1966 Rock singer David Jones changes his last name to Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees. David Bowie is a British Rock star who exhibits lavish musical stage acts, including his character Ziggy Stardust. In 1975, he co-writes Fame with John Lennon which became his first American #1 single. In 1996, David inducts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On January 10, 2016, David Bowie dies from cancer at 69.
BEN HAROLD [KXOL-1360, KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Subject: #1487 and #1475. Hey Jim! Bill Hill is correct. Sadly, Hal’s untimely demise was at the Kerrville Air Show. Mike Cannon from KNER and I were going to meet up there and watch him fly. Mike got a flat on his VW and I got stuck at KGKL, San Angelo, covering another plane crash. I must have taken over Len Hart’s position doing news for Hal at KENR (don’t ask me the dates, either – it was TOO long ago). The late Bill Alford hired me away from KNUZ to do news for Hal. Bill Bailey was doing mornings and I believe YOU showed up right after Scott Reese (also a KXOL’er). For the record, Bill Alford was later replaced as ND and I got busted to street reporter. So I went to San Angelo as ND. Ben Harold
BILL BAILEY (January 13, 1964 – p) Toughest job I ever had: selling doors, door to door.
