TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC & WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO-860/KONO TV news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim and Suzie, Don’t worry bout me. Wasn’t that the title of a song by the guy who sang “El Paso”? He was a DJ on WARL outta Arlington, Virginia while I was stationed at D.C. as a 19-20 year old Sailor in 1952-3. Marty Robbins was his name. That was before he had a hit record. D.C. is where I met and married the coal miner’s daughter…Goodnight Irene. D.C. holds many memories for me. While I was stationed there, I worked as a Communications Technician at the Naval Security Station in Friendship Heights, Maryland. Great duty station, working 8am to 4:30 for the Navy, and then a cab to downtown D.C. where I worked as a Copy Boy at the old Washington Times Herald for tips from 5 to midnight. Sometimes I made as much as $60 bucks a week in tips.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Beginning in 1954, Peter Tripp becomes one of America’s best known Top-40 countdown radio personalities on Todd Storz’ WHB-810 in Kansas City, MO.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Subject: I was a DJ. My first radio job in Warren, PA, as summer fill-in, paid about $37 a week. I’d play pop music from 9:00-11:00 am, when the P.D. came in and did an hour of Hawaiian Music. Some years before the station had sponsored an Hawaiian trip. Then from 3:00-5:00 pm, I’d get to play rock and roll music, “For the kids,” although the records were pre-selected so that nothing to raucous or suggestive was played. I went to the Knights of Columbus and told them I’d like to use their auditorium to do record hops “For the kids.” Promoted all week without logging or paying for the time, and had around 200 kids the first Saturday night at a dollar a head. After paying all expenses I was taking home around $100 a week in 1962…until it caught up with me and I left town. Hope you and Suzi have a wonderful 2016, your friend don (www.thedonrocks.com)
CASEY KASEM (April 27, 1932 to June 15, 2014) Growing up, I actually wanted to be a professional baseball player instead of a radio DJ. Believe it or not.
