ROBERT MILLER [Eastern Michigan University Professor] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio March 11, 2016 [Friday] Issue #1493. One sad part about getting older is to have to read about the many losses of radio legends that seem to appear with increased regularity. Bob Guthrie was a colleague of my dad, Les Miller, at WOAI in the old days. Though I was but a minor part in SA radio I still have to give props to those guys who, without even knowing, wrote the book on a very important part of American radio history. Bob Miller

JOE FORD [KNUZ-1230, KILT-610, KFMK FM, KLDE FM] (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Ron Jacobs. So sorry to hear of the passing of John Rook and my dear friend, Ron Jacobs. What a job he did with Boss Radio, 93 KHJ. This was show biz in a show biz town. Big, glitzy, and perfection reigned! When his book hit the market, I called him and salivated over the sound and the jocks he put together at probably the greatest top 40 radio station on the planet. I told him the book should be required reading for any young deejay who wants to find out what it’s like to be the best. All his staff memo’s, meeting notes to the staff, ratings, promo ideas-you name it. Not to mention behind the scenes daily life at KHJ. We emailed and talked several times and I think he was truly amazed at how many people in this business studied and learned from the radio structure he designed with Bill Drake back in the day. I never knew John Rook but I admired his talent. WLS was a powerhouse and blew me away. However, growing up in the So Cal area my idols were the Boss Radio guys but when I moved to Houston, the Big 89 was listenable at night, so on my way home from work, I would listen to John Records Landecker. I loved the jingles and the great Larry Lujack. RIP guys, you were both the BEST! Joe Ford Tx Radio Hall of Fame 2003 (KNUZ, KILT, KIKK, KENR, KRBE, KFMK, KLDE)

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM [ex KXOL-1360] (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio March 14, 2016 [Monday] Issue #1494. I want to take this moment of medication…I mean meditation…to weep very significant tears of the crocodile over the pending doom of noHeart media. This place has never had…and never will have…any form of empathy for the employees that made them great. They have always believed their goals were bigger than the people that met them. Those dicks can sell off all they want, the properties are not worth the amount of money it would take to salvage that black hole of inhumanity. Buy Byeeeeee, noHeart! Jeff Cunningham, DC
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 12, 1933 just eight days after his inauguration, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt broadcasts his first presidential address to the nation. It is the first of what becomes known as Roosevelt’s famous Fireside Chats, a name that CBS newsman, Robert Trout gives them.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Keith Emerson. I see that Keith Emerson has passed away at 71. I use to have an album by the group Nice. I was given it by the manager of the Doubleday on Commerce and later at North Park. He did comps due to my father shopping with him. I let someone borrow my album. I learned why when someone asked my father to borrow a book, he would call and see whether it was in Books In Print, and if a recording in Swann Music Catalog, etc. I once with my parents and friends of the family we were at Lake Tahoe at supper when I quoted a line from Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrine. My parents friends started laughing and one said I need to know more. So my father ordered the series and had it sent to them in Carlsbad, NM. Charles George
