ALL TIME TOP RADIO JOURNALIST PASSES Longtime radio-TV editor of Billboard magazine’s Vox Jox column, friend to all of us in radio, Claude Hall, who coins the phrase Easy Listening in 1965 to describe the sound of WPIX FM New York City passes away on Friday, July 7, 2017. During the 1960s and 1970s, when we see our name in Claude’s Vox Jox column in Billboard magazine everyone else in radio sees it, too. Claude mentions several of my moves in radio all across Texas. Claude Hall, we miss you already.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: “Million Dollar Quartet”. Mornin’ Jim: I’m sure most people have heard about, maybe even seen the pic of “The Million Dollar Quartet”, consisting of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. they were, of course all 4 Sun Records talents and hot sellers, back in the mid-fifties. My wife Shirley and I attended the stage play “Million Dollar Quartet” at Playhouse On The Square in midtown Memphis. The director had gotten me to record the opening voiceover and closing voiceover (“Ladies and Gentlemen Elvis has left the building”), and we got free season tickets for the tradeout. We had seen the national traveling troupe a few years ago at our local Orpheum. It was excellent, but there were a few changes in the script at the Playhouse On The Square performance, and it was amazingly great! They used all local talent, and they played everything live…singin’, pickin’, grinnin’, jokin’, all of it, even including the Sam Phillips character. If anybody reading this should have their local playhouse perform TMDQ, by all means go get your tickets and line up…more proof that Memphis is really the Cradle of Rock, the Home of The Blues, The Beginning of Country, The Heart of Gospel, & The Sole of Soul…you’ll love it!
TRIVIA ANSWER: George W. Trendle co-owner/manager of WXYZ-1270 Detroit, MI selects non-copyrighted Classical music as The Lone Ranger theme because it is royalty-free.
JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Society of Houston Radio Broadcasters????? Hey Jim, in a posting about this year’s inductees into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame, Karen “Duckie” Massey said there is also a Society of Houston Radio Broadcasters which people can be nominated for. Really? I worked up and down the dial in Houston radio for many years and I’ve never heard of a group like that. Do you or one of our readers know anything about that? Jim Bell – Retired in Lufkin.
GORDON SMITH (May 25, 1952 – p) Radio continues to be the very best advertising music performers have. No one who ever grabbed a Grammy got there without radio.
