PINOCCHIO’S VOICE LEAVES THE MICROPHONE In his long career, actor Dick Jones appears in more than 100 films and television shows but we probably remember his voice the most. At around 10 years old, when his name is Dickie, Walt Disney chooses Jones as the voice of Pinocchio in the Classic 1940 animated film. This is nothing new for Dickie because he already appears in nearly 40 movies before he lands the role of Pinocchio. The son of a Texas newspaper editor by age 4 Jones learns to ride and rope and has a Western show career. Other roles include Henry Aldrich on the radio show The Aldrich Family, plus parts in movies Destry Rides Again and Stella Dallas. On Monday, July 7, 2014 Dick Jones dies at 87 after a fall at home.

IS THE SHOCK JOCK ERA OVER? Is SiriusXM’s firing of Anthony Cumia one of the final nails in its coffin where the era of the shock jock is over? Radio Insight reports: Some traditional radio expatriates like longtime talk host Don Geronimo and Tom Leykis find niches with streaming shows and podcasts. Just like cable TV news, demographics are now a major problem for Talk radio stations because the median listener age glides higher into their 60s. Nothing new comes forth nationally to attract a younger audience. Perhaps it’s time to dig into a younger audience’s world to find people like Pete Holmes or Bill Burr that do a different kind of Talk show and bring younger listeners back to commercial Talk radio nationally. Just a thought.
THE LONE RANGER SELLS HIS OUTFIT There is a recent movie about The Lone Ranger but to many of us it is a farce because the only real Lone Ranger is Clayton Moore who rides his white steed Silver for law and order in the old west in the 1950s TV series along with his sidekick Tonto (Jay Silverheels). After he leaves the popular Lone Ranger TV show that airs from 1949 to 1957 on ABC, Moore makes many public appearances as the masked lawman. The Lone Ranger’s matching light blue shirt and pants, red kerchief, Stetson hat, cowboy boots and belt holster with two custom-made Colt pistols sells at Waco, TX-based auction house A & S Auction Company on Saturday, July 12, 2014 to an undisclosed buyer for $195,000. Hi yo Silver! Away!

JOE FORD [ex KLDE FM/KNUZ-1230/KILT-610] (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, I just heard about the loss of your best girl, Lacy. I’m so sorry to hear the terrible news and I know how you’re suffering. It’s been two years since we lost our beautiful, two year old Great Pyrenees, Morgan, to a severe liver disease. If we didn’t have his sister, Annie, to comfort us, I think I would have thrown in the towel. These precious pets are never around long enough, it seems, so we look forward to every moment we have with them. Plus, they teach us a great lesson. The lesson of unconditional love. I hope we all learn from it. God bless and RIP, Lacy. Joe Ford

JAY WEAVER [KILT-610, KODA FM and KRIO-1000] (DFW-Hurst, TX) I know when you have to set something up in a format as you do, it takes time, especially if the format insists on doing it the way it wants. But the time you spend on gathering information twice weekly must also take time – a lot of time. It takes me time to edit down and set up right what I mail to you! I appreciate what you do and I love getting your mailings! It’s the only spot left to see where some of the radio people are and what they are doing. Even though I didn’t spend that many years in radio, I made a lot of friends and, of course I am always interested in where those of “my radio generation” are now. Very few are still in radio and luckily a lot of them survived radio. Thank you for all you do Jim! Jay Weaver

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Why Classic Rock Isn’t What It Used To Be. Unfortunately Jim, it seems like radio is destroying itself. In the early days, Dallas’ KZEW and Houston’s KLOL had hundreds of albums in their libraries, and then…started playing a limited number of hit tracks, an obvious copy of Top 40 Drake format. I hope you’re beginning to adjust to the loss of your beloved friend and companion Lacy.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Rod Allen, lead singer of The Fortunes, who hits the Top 10 in 1965 with You’ve Got Your Troubles dies on January 11, 2008 at 63 of liver cancer.
KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) Subject: Lacy. So very sorry, Jim. Urgent. Jim, Go to the Animal Shelter ASAP. Get a puppy. One that will never weigh more than 10 or 12 pounds. They eat little, and poop less. You will always be able to transport and care for it. Not to replace Lacy, but as a companion. You need a friend, and the two of you can take care of each other. Tell me when you have done this. This is a really important assignment and doing it promptly is critical. Your friend, Ken
