CINCY LOSES CLASSICAL MUSIC HOST In 1958, Paul Laumann challenges Cincinnati, OH radio listeners: One night, I made a speech on the air and said if the listeners put up a fuss, if they complained loud enough and long enough, they could get classical music on the air. With that statement, Paul becomes one of Cincinnati’s best known voices in Classical music. Today’s radio has computers that line up each song every hour. DJs no longer have a choice as to what they play on the air. In the 1960s, Laumann plays Classical music on University of Cincinnati’s WGUC FM (90.9). WGUC FM executive producer Mark Perzel remembers: Every morning, Paul shows up with his record case of personal records. On Tuesday, July 14, 2014 Paul Laumann passes away at 89.

THE COYOTE RETIRES From 1978-80 when I’m a DJ on Top 40 KULF-790 here in Houston, TX top radio personalities come and go. In 1979, KULF-790 brings in Coyote Calhoun from power house WAKY-790 in Louisville, KY for the 7 pm-midnight spot. Ironically, both KULF and WAKY share the same 790 radio frequency. Each night Coyote and I discuss our disgust for Disco music. Calhoun picks my brain about Country music because of my programming background. Coyote exits KULF to a Louisville FM frequency and turns it into a top Country radio station. After nearly 35 years, Coyote Calhoun retires at the end of 2014 as WAMZ’s only PD: I have loved every minute at 97.5 WAMZ. My health is great, and now is the time to go out, travel, and have some fun.
ROBOTS TAKE OVER TV JOURNALISM Robots already replace studio camera operators at some local TV stations. How soon is it until local TV stations adopt the latest technology of robotic journalists? AP already uses a program called Automated Insights that writes business news faster than humans. Huffington Post asks are human journalists screwed? In June, Japan takes the idea of robot journalism to the next level when it creates the very first robot news anchor: an android that can arguably read news stories better than humans. New York Magazine’s Kevin Roose is an optimist. He argues that the robot-generated stories still lack in talent and creativity, skills that only humans can bring to the writing and editing process. Amen!

TONY WILLIAMS [ex WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, I am so sorry to hear about Lacy in your newsletter. My cancer problems kept me from writing sooner. I know you miss her because I know the feeling. Even if some do not think so, Lacy and others are family members. I am not sure if Ken Dowe’s advice about another companion is right now. If it is, I would do it. If you need time, I would do that. The new look JRRR looks great, I think. Quite nice. I like the typeface too. Here is a look at Bond’s Aston Martin filmed probably 50 years ago. It appears at the beginning of the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tasf1TkUou8 Tony and Scooter
JAY WEAVER [KCUL-1540/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, I am truly saddened by the death of Lacy. You spoke of her as though she was a person. I know how much she meant to you. I hope you do well in the next several days as the sadness wears away and you know she is better off where she is now. She is no longer suffering and the Good Lord above didn’t let her suffer long. You know she wouldn’t want to be you buddy and pal the way she was feeling so she spared herself and you from a long sickness. That is the good part! Hang in there buddy…it will get better. It always does!
TRIVIA ANSWER: Drummer, Joey Kramer used to write aerosmith on his high school notebooks because he thinks it sounds cool. When he proposes the name to the group, they say: What? Like that book they make you read in high school? Meaning the 1925 book Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis. Kramer says: No. A-e-r-o smith. So, Aerosmith becomes the name of their new Rock group.
LARRY SCOTT [ex KBOX-KRLD-KWKH-KLAC-KVOO] (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Jim, I’ve learned not to dwell on one’s loss but think about the good times you had together. I’m always Reminded of the old Gospel Song “Precious Memories.” Precious Memories How They Linger How They Ever Flood My Soul. Be thankful you have those precious memories. Larry
CHET MAXWELL [ex GM KBOX-1480] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Lacy. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Chet
J.R. KENNEDY [ex KNUZ-1230] (Houston, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, so very sorry for your loss. We are ALL time limited…and she had a good bunch of years thanks to you.
ANDY WALDROP [KUHF FM 88.7] (Houston, TX) Subject: Lacy. Jim, I guess with just getting back from Kansas recently and being out-of-pocket while I was up there, I missed the news of Lacy’s passing. I was not aware that she was even sick. I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your constant companion. Andy
