RADIO AIRS WARNINGS AFTER NEPAL LANDSLIDE At least eight people die in a huge landslide in northern Nepal. The death toll might rise as attempts to rescue people from homes under piles of rocks and soil in the Sindhupalchok region. Rubble blocks a mountain river near the village, that causes the water to form a lake which threatens to burst through the temporary dam and sweep away several villages. Nepal’s Home Ministry orders the army to remove the blockade and release the water, while it prepares for a disaster if the banks of the two mile long lake burst. Officials report that Telephone and electricity lines are disrupted but radio stations air warnings and police use loudspeakers.

TALK EXITS FM RETURNS TO AM In the past few years we witness Talk radio which dominates the AM band gradually slide to FM. Recently, Radio Ink informs us that just the opposite occurs at Clear Channel WPGB FM (104.7) Pittsburgh, PA which tosses its News/Talk format back to the AM dial on Frank Iorio’s WJAS-AM 1320. WPGB FM replaces Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Dave Ramsey and Glenn Beck with Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith and Brad Paisley. As WPGB FM changes to Country, Rush, Sean and Glenn head for WJAS-AM 1320. When Iorio buys WJAS-AM 1320 from Tony Renda for $1 million he causes its flip flop to News-Talk. Clear Channel kicks off Country on Big 104.7 with 10,000 songs in a row plus the Bobby Bones morning show.
ABC RADIO SPLITS FROM CUMULUS AND WESTWOOD ONE In 2011, Cumulus Media acquires Citadel Broadcasting. On July 31, 2014 CNN becomes Cumulus News new powerhouse. Cumulus begins to pay down its $2.6 Billion debt. With ABC News Radio’s expanded operation its distribution agreement with Cumulus winds up at the end of 2014. ABC announces that beginning on January 1, 2015 Westwood One will no longer distribute its product. ABC News Radio teams up with Skyview Networks to deliver its content. ABC News President James Goldston calls this the beginning of a new era. On September 2, 2014 David Muir replaces ABC TV veteran Diane Sawyer on World News. Diane exits World News in August 2014.
FCC FINES SIX TX TV STATIONS The FCC fines four Texas TV stations a combined $10,000 for kid vid rule violations in their 2014 FCC license renewals. LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, At the height of the Watergate scandal, it was a bit more formal than other news conferences. As Rather approached the microphone, he identified himself with these words: “Dan Rather, CBS News”. Half of the hall applauded, but almost as many non-news types JEERED! When the hubub died down, Nixon said: “Are you running for something, Mr. Rather? “Rather shot back: “No, Mr. President; are you?” Half of the hall broke out in applause, other laughter. Your friend, Len

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Glad that you will be getting a new friend. I still think about the pets that I have had growing up. The first was a dog that was found by Children’s Librarians downtown. My dad calls and…asks how I would like a puppy, I said that would be wonderful. My mother goes, “we were going to go to Rivershaun park then the circus today, but if we get the dog we won’t be able.” I let it be known the puppy was more important. We pick up the puppy and it sits next to me in the car. We get home and mother says, “We still have time to go to the Circus.” We called the dog, Becky. I liked it because of a girl on the block but my parents because of a librarian they knew. How much is that doggy in the window… Charles George, KC5RAI

It’s a fun look back on KZEW-The Zoo, and the record biz and music of the 1970’s. As founding program director of The Zoo I’m interviewed extensively in the movie. The film is produced and narrated by Kirby Warnock, who was with Buddy Magazine during that exciting time. Ira “Eye” Lipson; Certified Media Hotshot; Dallas, Texas USA (www.Lipsonworks.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1967 when Rock group Blood Sweat & Tears first begins to gain attention, a misconception arises that their name comes from Winston Churchill’s quote: I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. But Blood Sweat & Tears founder, Al Kooper comes up with their name when he is on the phone with a promoter as he gazes at a Johnny Cash album cover with the title: Blood Sweat & Tears.
JAY WEAVER [ex KCUL-1540/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) I recently discovered an old timer in radio and he is still doing a radio show radio. The guy’s name is Cary Hobbs. He started in radio at age 14. He was on the air and had his own radio show on a regular basis at age 14. He stated at KDAV in Lubbock. He was in Lubbock when I was in Lubbock, but was ahead of me by eight years in radio experience when I stated at age 22. He was raised in Lubbock, graduated from high school in Lubbock, went to Texas Tech and graduated. The last time I saw Cary, he was working for IBM. Today he does afternoons on KTMP 1340 AM, “Hometown Country Radio” in Heber City, Utah just outside of Salt Lake City. WOW! Thank you for all you do Jim! Jay Weaver
JOHN WAYNE [The Shootist] It isn’t always about being fast or even accurate that counts, it’s being willing.
