KLEIN PROVES YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN Twenty years ago, Jerry Klein does late-nights on 50,000-watt Blowtorch of the South Talk WBT-1110 Charlotte, NC. In October 1997, WBT-1110 releases him. He shifts to WMAL-630 Washington, DC as host, senior producer, and assistant program and marketing director. In 2011, Jerry has esophageal cancer and serious liver disease. Then his wife dies. Unable to work, he moves into a Charlotte friend’s spare bedroom. Through prayer, Klein’s cancer disappears. On August 29, 2014 Klein returns to WBT-1110 to fill-in for John Hancock (3:00 pm – 6:00 pm), plus he will be on the air on Labor Day for Keith Larson on Monday, September 1, 2014 (9:00 am – 12 noon). Jerry Klein proves that you can go home again.
NFL WANTS ARTISTS TO PAY TO PLAY AT SUPER BOWL The Super Bowl is American television’s biggest stage. The Wall Street Journal reports that an estimated 115.3 million viewers tune in to watch Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers play the halftime show during this past February’s Super Bowl which doubles the audience of the Academy Awards. MTV can demand artists to pay for their music videos to be on MTV because music videos are effective advertisements for fans to buy their records and attend their concerts. Likewise, the NFL offers artists the biggest advertising stage that is available. The Super Bowl is a ratings smash. This American cultural event draws the largest television audience no matter who performs at halftime.
ARE THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS FINISHED? The Washington Redskins professional American football team’s location is the Washington, D.C., metro area. The team founded in 1932 is in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference of the National Football League. The Washington Redskins win NFL championships in 1991, 1987 and 1982. Their former name is the Boston Redskins. Their fight song Hail to the Redskins does not measure up to today’s political correctness which aims to completely change America into something else. Phil Simms CBS lead analyst bows to pressure and says during Thursday night September 25th game between the Giants and the Redskins he will refer to the Redskins only as Washington.
TRIVIA QUESTION: How do The Bay City Rollers come up with their name? The answer appears below.

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, Hope this helps… I wish I had kept a diary but –alas –I did not. There was enough action, characters and national figures to write tons of books about. On my blog I have a short list of some of the celeb/world figure interviews I did. A short list includes George H.W. Bush (seems like I was always sticking a mic in his face), Nelson Rockefeller, Milton Friedman, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon (I was in Jones Hall when Dan Rather and Nixon exchanged barbs. Your friend, Len

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, Regarding the AFN 873 kc transmitter going dark, while it was intended to serve American forces in the Frankfurt-Wiesbaden area, it was 150,000 watts and covered a large swath of central Europe. My first Army assignment in Europe was to AFN Frankfurt and I remember getting a letter from a listener in Kent, England in the autumn of 1962 asking if I had heard of “The Mersey Beat” of bands playing around Liverpool. Of course, I hadn’t at that time but a lot them made a pretty big splash outside of Liverpool a few months later. Mike Marshall
JIM MCCURDY (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Stations where I worked… Hey Jim, I hope your days is going well! Thanks for posting my comments on JRR. My pedigree is: KRBC-1470; KNIT-1280; KORQ/ KTLC-100.7; KRBC-TV News Anchor; KTAB-TV News Anchor. My last TV Newscast was in 1995, so I’ve been out of the biz for a while, but really enjoyed my time on the air as a DJ and as a TV News Anchor. Man, times have certainly changed since I was on the air. Some for the good and some not so good! My best to you!! Jim McCurdy

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Most newspapers had both wire services, and the big city papers also had Reuters and any local news services as they have in LA. When the first shots rang out in Dallas, Merriman Smith of UPI was nearest the only radiotelephone in the press car. He leaned over the phone to prevent anyone from grabbing it. He keep dictating to the New York bureau while Jack Bell of AP was literally beating Smith on the back to give him the phone. By the time, Bell got the phone, the line was dead. Smith was already out of the car headed Parkland. On the old tapes of NBC-TV, you can tell when Bill Ryan (WNBC-TV anchorman), Chet Huntley and Frank McGee begin reading UPI copy rather than AP. After two or three hours, Chet Huntley was taken off the air, not to appear again that evening because he started to become overwrought on the air. Do you have any airchecks of yourself on KILT-AM and/or KILT-FM? I sure would like to hear them. Tony
TRIVIA ANSWER: Scottish pop band The Bay City Rollers who hit their stride in the 1970s have a unique way to come up with their name. In 1966, bassist Alan Longmuir, younger brother, drummer Derek Longmuir and school chum lead singer Gordon [Nobby] Clark found The Saxons in Edinburgh, Scotland. When they search for a new name they toss a dart at a map of the United States, the dart lands near Bay City, MI. So they change The Saxons to The Bay City Rollers. Around Thanksgiving 1975 their only hit Saturday Night rings #1 with over a half million in sales.
DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Stretcher Brothers win International Radio Program of the Year award. NTRB Radio hosts Eye Lipson and Don Sundeen, “The Stretcher Brothers,” have been awarded the 2013 IAAIS, “Non-Reading Entertainment Program of the Year” award for their production of the one hour radio special, “A Musical Celebration of Labor Day.” Ira Lipson commented that although the production was a lot of work, it was also a lot of fun to do. The program is available to all IAAIS stations in the United States for play on the holiday. Why Labor Day? According to Sundeen, “We decided that at this point in our lives, we ought to find out what labor is.” This is the Stretcher Brothers second IAAIS award, the first came in 2012 for their highly produced, “Supermarket Special Show,” featuring weekly grocery specials with a rock instrumental sound track, sound effects and humorous commentary.
