LEGENDARY PHILLY DJ SUCCUMBS Exemplary Philadelphia morning personality, Don Cannon, passes away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 74. Don Cannon, whose real name is Dominic Canzano, who Philly listeners know as The Dean of Philadelphia Radio that begins in 1969 on the legendary WIBG-1020 (Wibbage) also includes WIP, WFIL, WIFI, WSNI plus his most recent morning mission on CBS Classic Hits WOGL FM (98.1) where Cannon In The Morning rules the roost from 1990 until he retires in 2004. Probably Cannon’s biggest claim to fame is his voice in the 1976 movie Rocky. Listen carefully and you will recognize Cannon’s voice on the radio in Rocky Balboa’s apartment during that now famous pre-dawn raw egg-guzzling scene.

POPULAR TALK PERSONALITY HAS PARKINSON’S In 2001, established KGO-810 San Francisco talk personality Ronn Owens receives a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. Recently, Ronn goes public with his diagnosis. Owens tells the San Francisco Chronicle that he postpones the announcement about his condition because he didn’t want people feeling sorry for him and didn’t want to be identified by his illness. Ronn tells the Chronicle’s David Wiegand that he manages Parkinson’s with medications but feels that the time is now right to update his listeners about it. I felt it was important to tell people that it’s not a death sentence. The 68-year-old Owens has no plans to retire from radio if KGO-810 still wants him.
TRAVIS EXITS POPULAR 3HL RADIO PROGRAM Because contract negotiations fail, controversial Nashville, TN sports radio personality Clay Travis vacates his co-host spot on the popular 3HL radio show on Nashville’s #1 Sports Talk Station Cumulus WGFX FM (104.5 The Zone). For the past several months, Travis and his sports program co-hosts Brent Dougherty, former Tennessee Titan Blaine Bishop are in contract negotiations but his contract expires at the end of August 2014. Travis says WGFX FM extends an offer this week a $5,000 raise but it is too low, given his perceived market value. WGFX FM 104.5 The Zone is one of the most successful sports talk stations in America.
MUSIC DEPARTS MUSIC ROW Sony Music is the latest music business to exit Nashville. TN’s famous Music Row. This indicates an identity crisis that now confronts the 60-year-old stretch of recording studios and dozens of independent music-related businesses. As Country music’s audience grows bigger than ever, the music industry longs for ways to make money as digital disrupts their standard business model. Sony Music Nashville relocates its headquarters off of famed Music Row in favor of a new office building under construction in the Gulch. Eakin Partners new construction begins in summer 2014 on a $97 million office building at 1201 Demonbreun Street in the Gulch. The building showcases 275,000 square feet of top-shelf Class A office space.

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, Hope this helps… I wish I had kept a diary but –alas –I did not. There was enough action, characters and national figures to write tons of books about. On my blog I have a short list of some of the celeb/world figure interviews I did. A short list includes George H.W. Bush (seems like I was always sticking a mic in his face), Nelson Rockefeller, Milton Friedman, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon (I was in Jones Hall when Dan Rather and Nixon exchanged barbs. Your friend, Len

MIKE MARSHALL [previous WFAA-820, KFJZ-1270, KGOL FM DJ] (Houston, TX) Jim, Regarding the AFN 873 kc transmitter going dark, while it was intended to serve American forces in the Frankfurt-Wiesbaden area, it was 150,000 watts and covered a large swath of central Europe. My first Army assignment in Europe was to AFN Frankfurt and I remember getting a letter from a listener in Kent, England in the autumn of 1962 asking if I had heard of “The Mersey Beat” of bands playing around Liverpool. Of course, I hadn’t at that time but a lot them made a pretty big splash outside of Liverpool a few months later. Mike Marshall

GARY DELAUNE [ex KLIF-1190-CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: the way I see it… Hi Jim: Congrats on the new family pooch. We have two small Yorkies and for some reason they control the house. First: Political correctness is running amuck and common sense has disappeared. I lived in Santa Fe, was one of 5 Anglo students in my 5th grade class with Hispanics and Navajos. I married a beautiful nurse who is part Cherokee and she thinks the Redskin furor is laughable. I trekked the football field of Oklahoma City’s Redskin Stadium for the Capitol Hill Redskins; My first date was at the Redskin Theatre and Jake Spavital, offensive coordinator for the Aggies, won a state championship playing for the Tulsa Union H.S. Redskins. Allie Reynolds, great Yankee pitcher, was Native American who played for CHHS Redskins and Oklahoma is two words meaning red people…Okla Huma…With the world in a pit of terrorist despair, I think Americans should be more concerned with survival than P.C. Maybe Johnny Football was simply trying to say “How” without the whole hand. Gary D. (www.garydnews.com)
CHARLES GEORGE [past KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jesse Lopez. I was wondering whether you are others remember a song by Jesse Lopez the brother of Trini Lopez? It use to remind me of the song Let’s Dance, Chris Montez when I would hear it on the radio. It is interesting that Trini Lopez worked at a club once owned by Jack Ruby. Jack Ruby also owned the Longhorn Ballroom, then he sold it to Dewey Grooms, he had bought it from Bob Wells from what I read in a book about the History Of Dallas. If Radio Disney leaves 620, the frequency should go back to Wichita Falls. I use to enjoy KWFT with its M.O.R. format. Though I once got Voz Of Nicaragua on 620 and they even sent me a letter as a confirmation. I use to hear Radio Belize on 834, but now their stations are only FM and the Internet. Charles George, KC5RAI
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1965 The Beatles sing and record Yesterday. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the most recorded song in history. Recent estimate shows that there are 4, 000 recordings of Yesterday. It also holds the Guinness book of record as the most covered song. Paul McCartney writes Yesterday but the other 3 Beatles dislike it so much they refuse to release it in the U.K. In March, 1966 The Beatles finally release Yesterday in the U.K.
TONY WILLIAMS [one-time on WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) …But on the day of the Kennedy assassination, if one of the Houston papers at time (Post or Chronicle) did not have UPI, that paper would have gotten second-rate coverage. AP was behind on the story from the beginning and never caught up. One early bulletin from the AP stated that the Secret Service fired automatic weapons. No shots were ever fired by the Secret Service that day.
ETHEL WATERS (October 31, 1896 – September 1, 1977) Today or any day that phone may ring and bring good news.
