STUNNING MUSIC INDUSTRY VETERAN LEAVES US The passing of the lovely Kristen Guarino Hastie on Sunday, September 7, 2014 after a battle with cancer deeply shocks and saddens all of us in the music industry. Hastie begins her music career at WSHE FM (103.5) Miami, FL. She also is with former trade publication Network 40. Most recently Kristen joins Westwood One as an Affiliate Sales Manager. Dennis Green, Westwood One SVP of Affiliate Sales, fantasizes: Westwood One lost a member of our family with the passing of Kristen Guarino-Hastie. Kristen is one of the stars of our Affiliate Sales business team for many years, thanks to her time at Cumulus Media Networks, ABC Radio Networks, and a previous stint at Westwood One.

CHICAGO THEATER MOURNS LOSS OF TWO The close-knit Windy City theater community is brokenhearted over the loss of two of its troupers. First we lose attractive stage actress Molly Glynn to a freak storm tree. On Saturday morning September 6, 2014 on his way to a rehearsal at the Theatre at the Center in Munster, IN 50-year-old star of countless musicals in Chicago, Bernie Yvon, dies in a car crash a little after 11 am at Calumet Avenue and Broadmoor Street in Munster. Bernie is in prep for his musical, Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which opens next week. William Pullinsi, theater artistic director remembers: We did all kinds of shows together. He had so many friends in the business.
STORM TREE ASSAULTS AND ANNIHILATES ACTRESS Officials tell us that on Friday, September 5, 2014 during a fast-moving afternoon storm a falling tree thunders like dynamite into longtime Chicago, IL theater actress Molly Glynn while she bicycles with husband fellow theater actor Joe Foust on a north suburban forest preserve trail. Sources say heavy winds blow in and uproot a tree which falls directly onto the path where she rides her bike and torpedoes into her. Molly’s husband quickly dials 911. Around 3:40 pm Cook County Forest Preserve police respond to the call about a tree that strikes the 46-year-old woman. NorthShore Evanston Hospital spokeswoman Colette Urban confirms that Molly Glynn dies at about 1:15 pm Saturday afternoon.
TOO MANY ADS DRIVES AWAY LISTENERS A recent item in Radio Ink states: Is too much advertising killing Talk radio? Inside the industry, we have this debate all the time. How can radio reduce its spot load? Professor of Political Science at Grove City College and author of 11 Principles of a Reagan Conservative, Paul Kengor, suggests that the public turns away from Conservative Talk radio because of too much advertising, not because they are tired of the politics: There can’t be more than 33 minutes of actual program per hour. Why would anyone listen to this? Conservative talk radio is in peril because of conservative greed. There’s simply too much advertising on Conservative talk radio.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What singer reports indicate has the most violent music videos? The answer appears below.

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, I was officially “News Director” for KILT-FM; Jim C was –of course –News D for AM which was still the “fair haired boy” : ) Bill Young, of course, knew that FM was the wave of the future. Robert B was inside and broadcast solely on AM at the time. I cannot recall the name of the outside guy at the time. It was “something” Daniels. I think he later went to KTRH. In any case, after about a year, I was offered News Director with KNUS (Dallas). I took it and, for awhile, did the morning news block as Ken Dowe was doing his ‘Granny Emma’ routines during the morning, KNUS was Gordon McLendons new baby. KLIF was AM, old technology. FM was the wave of the future. Carola was happy to get me back to KILT. Your friend, Len

NICK ALEXANDER (Coppell, TX) Subject: Al “Super Handy Man ” Carrell. Al Carrell started on WFAA Newstalk 57 in the late 70’s (he was there in 79 when I arrived) and was there several years before moving to 660 AM. He was a wonderful man and a pleasure to work with. RIP. Nick Alexander KVIL, WFAA/KZEW, KLIF, KNUS and several other stations. I’ve always said if you haven’t been fired from radio then you aren’t any good. I was fired as many times as I moved on my own. Best move: starting my own company. :o)

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Ron Chapman was Mr. KVIL, and no one else could really challenge that. Mike did afternoons and was quite successful, participated in the famous ‘Around the World’ race with Ron going one way and Mike the other, but he was basically a hip rock jock and KVIL’s target was the 35 year old housewife. I don’t know if you remember this, but at one time at KLIF, the(y) had the FM in a closet in the hall playing ‘underground music.’ Selden would do a show on both stations and refer to himself as “Mike Selden, AM&FM.”

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Hi, I remember in 1980 or so NPR tried to get rid of all the low powered stations running less than 100 KW and those that were on the air less than 12 Hours a day. They implied anything less was a sandbox and a waste of air space and should be allocated to those with more resources. Lorenzo Milam when he was at KCHU (FM) was against Government or Corporations funding, just thought listeners should sustain the station. I agree, since it can effect programming, censorship whether direct or in-direct. Like new musicians will find it harder to get air play. Charles George, KC5RAI
TRIVIA ANSWER: The National Coalition on Television Violence says that Michael Jackson produces the most violent music videos. Black Or White shows Jackson doing his infamous crotch-rubbing, smashing store windows and destroying a car with a metal crowbar. Jackson’s rampage and crotch grabbing causes controversy with many parents of young children.
TOM BLACKWELL [N5GAR] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Jack Ruby and Russ Knight. Click here: http://jfkassassination.net/russ/testimony/moore_r.htm
JACK RUBY (March 25, 1911 – January 3, 1967) I am as innocent regarding any conspiracy as any of you gentlemen in the room.
