UNCLE SAM SPIES ON JOURNALISTS A new Pew Research Center study indicates that most investigative journalists believe that the American government spies on them. That’s right! This tell all concludes that 671 Investigative Reporters and Editors admit that Uncle Sam probably collects data on their phone calls, emails and other online communications. A huge 71% believe the feds collect data from their communications. Only 21% feel that their employer takes steps to protect them and their sources.

IS FRIDAY 13TH AN UNLUCKY DAY? The fear of Friday the 13th is paraskevidekatriaphobia. Many consider it to be bad luck when 13 people sit at a table for dinner. Allegedly, this is because Judas Iscariot is the 13th person to dine at The Last Supper. William of Normandy puts an end to King Harold II’s reign during the Battle of Hastings on Friday, October 13, 1066. Suzie and I hope that this Friday the 13th is the luckiest one of them all for you.
DEES RECEIVES AWARD On January 23, 2015 Pacific Pioneer Broadcaster’s honor Los Angeles radio legend Rick Dees at its annual celebrity luncheon at Sportsmen’s Lodge in Sherman Oaks, CA. Commander Chuck Street, Dees’ former KIIS FM Los Angeles airborne traffic reporter who is now the President of Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, presents Dees with the Art Gilmore Career Achievement Award. Special guests include Wink and Sandy Martindale. We remember Rick Dees’ 1976 novelty dance tune Disco Duck.
DISCO DUCK Never have the honor to spin Disco Duck because by the time Rick Dees releases the single on September 4, 1976 Top 40 KXOL-1360 already flips to Country. Rick says his inspiration to write Disco Duck comes from Jackie Lee’s 1965 novelty dance song The Duck. Even though Disco Duck becomes a nationwide hit WMPS-1210 management forbids Dees from playing the song on his own show. WMPS-1210 fires Dees when he mentions Disco Duck on the air.

WINK MARTINDALE [former WHBQ-560 DJ plus legendary TV game show host Tic Tac Dough (1978-1985)] (Los Angeles-Calabasas, CA) Good morning Jim! So nice to receive your note Please know that I am an avid reader of your report/ column on a regular basis. I learn so much from it. Thank God we have a persons like you and your wife who love our business so much. As you can imagine I’ve known Rick (Dees) for many, many years. Our careers are similar (in a way). I was the morning jock at WHBQ Radio, Memphis in the Fifties before being transferred by RKO To KHJ, Los Angeles in ’59. When Rick left WMPS, Memphis in the Sixties…he took over mornings at WHBQ and achieved enormous success. It was during this period in his career that he wrote and recorded “Disco Duck” (and sadly and ridiculously was terminated for playing it on the air!). He then left Memphis for KHJ in Los Angeles. Sound familiar. All of us know well how he eventually “ended up” at KISS-FM and took that station to ratings success never seen in Los Angeles, before or since. It was such a pleasure having the opportunity to re-new my friendship with Rick at the Pioneer Broadcasters luncheon recently. Both he and his talented wife Julie couldn’t have been nicer, more down to earth and giving of their time for conversation, interviews, and picture taking. He invited my wife Sandy and me to visit with them on their 3,000 plus acre farm in Kentucky If/when we’re in “the neighborhood”! Wouldn’t he be surprised if we REALLY DID show up on his doorstep;)! Kudos to Rick for all he has accomplished. Nobody nicer. Best blessings to you both, Wink (

JAY WEAVER (KLBK – 1360, Lubbock; KBUY – 1540, Fort Worth) Jim, Bob was on KXOL (1360) doing the all night show shortly after high school graduation while at TCU. He was there pretty much in the early to mid 60’s. Prior to Bob doing nights on KXOL, Kenny Sargent did nights for years. Bob used his real name on the air, Bob Botik. As I recall, Bob left KXOL in the mid 60’s for KNOW in Austin. Kenny either passed while employed at KXOL doing his show or shortly thereafter. Sargent spent most of his early career as a singer for at least one of the lesser known “Big Bands”, Glen Gray and His Casa Loma Orchestra. Jay Weaver

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO [Longtime Houston, TX DJ/traffic reporter] (Tulsa, OK) Getting (back) into radio? No, I would love to, but I don’t have any air checks ~ I looked and couldn’t find any! I don’t know where the heck they went. I think I mentioned that I do make remarks about “bad” things our news anchors do…did it again this morning with mom saying, “now what’d she say?” Mom rolled her eyes when I repeated her comments.
