CHICAGO SUN TIMES WEATHER REPORT MURKY Each time the Chicago Sun-Times reduces its staff its newspaper becomes a fraction of its thickness. In fall 2013, Sun-Times Media unloads all of its 38 suburban newspapers to Tribune Publishing. According to a report in Crain’s Chicago Business the Times plans to release up to 15 more of its 73 employees. The Times offers the option of taking buyouts between 16 and 20 weeks of severance pay packages, depending on seniority.
WORLD’S TALLEST TOWER TOPPLES In 1954, KWTV TV CBS CH 9 Oklahoma City’s broadcast tower erects with the widest coverage of any station in the Southwest. KWTV TV call letters stand for World’s Tallest Video. Jack DeLier, former KWTV General Manager, remembers: We became known as the people with world’s tallest man-made structure. Time changes the news industry from analog to digital. News 9’s signal relocates to a different tower. Sixty years later, KWTV TV’s tall tower tumbles down to the ground.

MIKE KELLAM [ex KHFI FM/KHFI-970, NBC WMAQ-670 audio engineer] (Estes Park, CO) Subject: Just one more thing (No, I’m not Columbo!) HI, Jim! No, didn’t know Craig (Bean). Really, I didn’t know anyone at KVUE (TV). I am reasonably certain, however, that he was not on the air. I surely would have heard of him if he was. When I moved back to Austin in 1971, I got a job at KNOW (1490) radio in sales. Later, I tried on two or three occasions to get hired on at KVUE (TV), but was unsuccessful. I think that you had to be in with an insider there. It seemed to be a closed shop of some sort. I apparently didn’t belong to the right club, religion, or whatever. I get your newsletter announcements regularly. I would also like to hear from you every now and then. See you then! Mike Kellam

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360/KBUY-1540/WBAP-820/KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Subject: for the newsletter. I want to thank all readers, Jim, for their prayers during my battle with this evil colon cancer. I have already been through a month of chemo and radiation and the mass has shrunk considerably. Due to its location, the surgeon is wary about removal, so more tests are scheduled. I respectfully ask readers for their continued prayers – and many thanks to our friend, Blade, (Bob Edwards) for alerting JRRR to my issue. Ben Harold

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1967, the BBC bans from airplay a John Lennon tune from The Beatles 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band called Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite because the phrase Henry the horse combines two words individually known as slang for heroin. But its writer John Lennon denies the connection.
