Mike Porcaro plays bass for Grammy-winning Rock band Toto from 1982 until he retires from touring in 2007 because of his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease. HOUSTON, TX’S BOOM IS A BUST On October 28, 2011 Radio One announces that KROI FM (92.1) will flip to all-news beginning November 17th. Radio One goes on a hiring spree of familiar radio and TV names that includes former KTRH-740 morning team J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes. On October 8, 2014 at 9 am KROI FM ends its all-news format and lays off 47 employees. KROI FM flips to Classic Hip Hop Boom 92 but KROI FM’s boom is more like a bomb (2.5 – 2.0 – 1.7).
TV VIEWERSHIP DROPS 12% February 2015 is another heartbreaker for the $65 billion television ad business. TV ratings see double-digit declines for the fifth straight month. Nielsen reports that 40% of households now subscribe to a video service. Americans increasingly watch TV shows on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon streaming and other services. Media analyst Michael Nathanson’s report shows: Overall prime-time broadcast network ratings are off 12% last month compared to a year ago, while cable networks drop 11%.

BEN HAROLD [ex KLIF/KXOL/KNUZ/KENR] (Chattanooga, TN) Hi Jim, I’m still here, with surgery (FINALLY) scheduled for this evil colon cancer at the end of this month. Becky and I appreciate the (continued) prayers from all my old radio cohorts. Reading JRRR has kept my spirits up, to a degree, even though we’ve – sadly – lost more great air talent along the way. I remain holding firm in my belief that I’ll beat this thing! Keep up the great work, Jim. JRRR touches a LOT of hearts. Ben Harold.

GARY DELAUNE [KLIF-1190-CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) For a radio neophyte in those swinging 60’s, Jack (Woods) and Ron (Chapman) were great to work with when Joe Long, Roy Nichols and I did the news. What an experience to have started with Russ Knight and getting to share the mike with Ken Dowe and Johnny Dark. Also, the round mound of sound, Dunaway was always fun. But doing radio in that era, was a trip you never forget. No wonder when Dallas coughed everyone turned to KLIF: Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Nathaniel Adams Coles is born in Montgomery, AL on March 17, 1919. In the mid-1930s, while still a teen, he begins his performing career as Nat Cole. Cole acquires his nickname King while he performs at a certain Jazz night club. His nickname comes from the nursery rhyme about Old King Cole. In 1943, the King Cole Trio signs with Capitol Records. Completed in 1956, Capitol Records builds the world’s first circular office building in Los Angeles, CA near Hollywood and Vine known as The House that Nat Built.
JAY WALKER [KJKK FM/KTSA/KTFM FM/CBS Radio/Jay Walker Productions] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: Interesting observations recently. Jim is it just wishful thinking on my part or am I’m hearing more music, in English no less on the AM dial? The wife and I tend to go to town after dark to do our shopping and while she is inside searching for the best buys I’m usually outside in the car listening to the AM radio doing a little DXing. Seems for the last couple of months I’ve been hearing more and more music stations on the AM dial playing everything from “Rat Pack” era, Easy Listening, Country and 50’s-60’s oldies. These are “new” stations too, not the regulars like WSM etc. Maybe the scourge of AM radio (Talk) has finally released its death grip on the band? Sure hope so. Nothing beats music we like played the way it was meant to be heard in Marvelous Mono on AM radio, especially at night. Best wishes as always to you and Suzie, Jay Walker Out in the sticks north of McKinney TX…
AM MUSIC RADIO Around about 1975 is when AM music radio gives up the banner and hands it over to FM for music. However, many former Top 40 AM radio stations begin to flip to Country as happens at KXOL-1360 in 1976 and both KILTs in early 1981 during my time at both places. Next big AM radio flip is to Sports. And then some AM News-Talk radio stations move it on over to FM. The younger generation abandons radio as we once know it. Because we oldies but goodies still love our music on the AM band, maybe we have a new trend of bringing music back to AM radio.
BOB HAUCK [ex owner WWKE-1370] (Ocala, FL) Subject: Your Newsletter. Mr. Rose, My good friend and radio buddy, Col. Robert Hanger, recommended your radio newsletter. If possible, add my name to your list. Originally from Cincinnati, I had a 4 decade career in broadcasting with stations in WV, NC & FL. Thank you. Robert Hauck, Ocala FL.
JOHN LENNON (October 09, 1940 – December 08, 1980) I get by with a little help from my friends.
