JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Mornin’ Jim: I’m not sure I ever met Jerry Lee, but I’ve notice a number of times that when he’s performing, even on tv, there’s a “magic” in the air. He did special stage performance a number of years ago on the outdoor stage on the Mississippi downtown, during Cotton Carnival, and NBCs Today Show did their show everyday from Memphis, sometime at Graceland, sometime downtown. I watched one day when he was on, and that special magic came thru on tv…well. JP

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Looked at an article about twelve famous singers who died too soon…Among the twelve were two I had direct contact with…Mama Cass Elliot of the Mama’s and Papa’s…she and I had lunch in Cleveland in bout ’73…after lunch we went back to the radio station where she got sick and had to lay down on the couch in my office…we got her some medication and she recovered after a couple of hours. Janis Joplin whom I interviewed on my radio show the day of her concert which I mc’d. We made plans to have dinner after the show…When the show was finished three Hells Angels got backstage and were talking to Janis…I waved from across the stage and said “I’ll see you later” and left. That night they partied at the home of the man who owned to Agora ballroom (Hank Locanti) and completely trashed his house…Glad I went home.

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KZEW Reunion. Hi If you haven’t looked at it yet, please do, I think you’ll like it. I had Percy at 73 on Twitter and TheDonRocks Facebook page for the same reason, I looked up his birthdate. On this one, I did not know the kickoff (KZEW FM) was in ’73 until Ira told me. As my Sainted Mother would have said, ‘If it isn’t one thing it’s another.” I’m really glad we connected Jim, I love what you do and I think we have a lot in common. Btw, I tell the folks who write for my blog that we have the Williams/O’Reilly rule, “Unless you know something really happened, or you did something, it better be true.” www.thedonrocks.com / www.facebook.com/OfficialTheDonRocksPage / Twitter: Don Sundeen@TheRealDonRocks
TRIVIA ANSWER: Before The Grand Ole Opry goes on the air from WSM-650 in Nashville, TN on December 10, 1927 The Chicago Barn Dance debuts on WLS-890 in Chicago, IL on April 19, 1924. The Chicago Barn Dance later becomes The National Barn Dance. It continues on WLS-890, with a simulcast on the ABC Radio Network, on the NBC Radio Network and back to WLS-890 only. Fans want to see the show in person but WLS studios cannot hold them. So, they move The Barn Dance to the Eighth Street Theatre and charge admission. For 142 Saturday nights 304,271 fans pay admission – about 2,142 per show. The National Barn Dance later relocates to Chicago’s WGN-720 until April 30, 1960.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I liked KFAD in high school. I liked that they did progressive rock, before KZEW. Also they had Jazz and Blues. They played more of the artists that influenced Rock than did KZEW. Also KNUS was good as a Progressive Rock station before being turned into a Top-40 station with Ken Dowe doing mornings. The old KNUS transmitter was near West Moreland and KNON was using it when they first came on the air. KNON is more structured than its predecessor KCHU. KNUS had a much better signal than did KFAD. I also liked progressive rock from KGCC 89.7 from Grayson County Community College. The signal would make it to the house on Howard Avenue off of Military Parkway. Also deregulation has hurt many industries, but Radio will survive as long as people have a need. Study to show thy self approved…means to study even after graduating. Charles George
MICK JAGGER (July 26, 1943 – p) I know it’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll but I like it.
