ISIS THREATENS RADIO STATION For years, Country KDXY FM (The Fox 104.9) honors military members. But, recent developments in the Mid East cause the Jonesboro Radio Group to rethink its soldier salute to keep military members and their families safe in Region 8. This quick decision comes after increased threats against members of the military by ISIS. JRG Operations Manager and On-Air Personality Christie Matthews says: It’s been hard because it’s a shame that we can’t put their pictures up anymore.

MIKE KELLAM [ex KHFI FM/KHFI-970, NBC WMAQ-670 engineer] (Estes Park, CO) Hi, Jim! O wish I had seen that! Do remember Cal Druxman. Too bad he got fired. There was a Gordon Smith who was a fill-in for the (KHFI) TV weather. The thing about Gordon was that he could fill any amount of time needed whether he had anything to say or not but the viewers were none the wiser. Mike Kellam

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Jesse Kellam. Hey Jim, I worked at KTBC AM/FM for a couple of years in the mid 60s when Jesse Kellam was running LBJ’s radio and TV operations. I can tell you he was one of the finest men I ever worked for. He went to considerable lengths to help a member of my family out of a serious legal jam, so his name will always be spoken with respect in my house. Kellam went to work for LBJ in the 1930s when Lyndon started his rise to political fame and power. You won’t believe what Kellam did for a living before he met Lyndon. He was a high school football coach. In fact, he was the coach of the Lufkin Panthers right here in my home town of Lufkin, in the heart of east Texas. Now you know. Go Panthers!!

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Where radio is and where it was! Jim, I have a few thoughts on where we are with radio today. The good old days are gone from personality radio, and scoring big numbers per shift based on the DJ’s on-air style and personality. Today’s radio is really “narrowcasting“ instead of broadcasting. Competition from satellite radio and the internet have pretty much ended what we all were a part of when Top 40 was King. Today’s menu doesn’t come close to what we were offering back then. Using the “theatre of the mind” was what made shows work so well like the Charlie and Harrigan Show on KLIF, Hudson & Harrigan on KILT, Ken Dow and Granny Emma, Charlie Van Dyke, Charlie Tuna, Markee Baby on KFJZ, Russ the “Weird Beard” Knight, and all with the “Old Scotsman Gordon McClendon” touch. I really miss those days, and really enjoyed being a small part of it when I was on the air in Abilene with the Jimmy Mack Show in the late 60’s. The best to you and your sweet pooch my friend! Sincerely, Jim McCurdy
