JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Little Jimmy’s Guitars. Speaking of Little Jimmy’s guitars; about 25 years ago, I emceed a live show at Memphis Coliseum called “Grand Ole Opry Comes to Memhis”, featuring Little Jimmy, Faron Young, Jeannie Seely, and others, total of about 12 greats in all. It was on a Saturday, and we had a matinee, followed by the evening show after about a 2 hour break. I introduced Little Jimmy on the matinee, and after I introduced the next star, and walked off stage, Jimmy asked me: “When you introduce me in the evening show, would you lower the mic while I’m coming onstage…my guitar is so large and I’m so small, I can’t reach around it to adjust the mic?” Of course I was glad to do it, and he thanked me to the audience, then in person later. A great talent, extremely talented, and very appreciative. Jack Parnell, former jock & pd at WHBQ, Memphis, TN.

DON SUNDEEN [ex KELP-960 DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, have enjoyed reading messages that Memphis radio legend Jack Parnell has sent in. He’s a walking history of Memphis radio, and the music made there. Jack has a great voice, and I believe, hit the airwaves around 17 and is still a successful V/O artist. On a personal note Jim, Eye Lipson and I hope for improvement in your health issues, and continuation of JRRR in the New Year. You’ve been a blessing to many industry vets. (My birthday is Jan, 19, you missed it last year)

IRA [Eye] LIPSON [former PD of AOR KZEW FM The Zoo] (Dallas, TX) When I was program director of KZEW-The ZOO in Dallas in the 70s we had broadcast lines going into a top recording studio in Dallas, January Sound, where we periodically created live radio concerts with many top acts. Peter Frampton had recently split from Humble Pie and was embarking on a solo career and heading for a show in Dallas. We were able to snag him for a one hour live radio concert. It was a great radio show and one of the highlights was his song “Do You Feel Like We Do.” The listener feedback was fabulous and the next day we were getting lots of requests to replay that tune. The more we played it the more the phones rang until it became our most requested song for many months to come. The added bonus was that we were the only station in town that had the song. It must have been frustrating for DJs at the competition to have to tell their listeners that they couldn’t play it because it was a ZOO exclusive. The “Frampton Comes Alive” album eventually sold 11 million copies and Frampton’s career took off like a rocket. In recognition they awarded us a gold record for helping to launch Frampton into superstardom. Ira “Eye” Lipson; Certified Media Hotshot; Dallas, Texas (www.Lipsonworks.com)
