News reporter Mark Mulholland and his photographer Matt Soriano shoot film in an area near a soon to be closed and empty state prison when a corrections officer tells them they cannot shoot film there. When Mulholland tells the officer they will shoot at Grant’s cottage instead, prison cops tell them they cannot shoot film there either. TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim, It was such a kick to read your JRRR post from Bob Miller about my news writing ability. During the 1960’s when San Antonio began its emergence as a “major city”, Bob and I shared a common employment address on North St. Mary’s Street. That’s when KONO-TV, Channel 12 was THE Kick-azz television station in town. Our “12 Star Final” newscasts at 10pm had the highest ratings of any ABC affiliated TV station in the entire country. Bob was an important member of our award-winning team. Tom

CHUCK DUNAWAY [former DJ on WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: radio. Jim; You keep asking for input as to what is wrong with today’s radio. I’m am at an age (almost 80) where I find what I want on the AM band and mostly syndicated programs…so I’m happy. When it comes to satellite I’ve got a gripe. I think Sirius is off track with most of its music channels. They play a very broad selection of tunes…too broad for my tender ears. I hear lots of tunes I’ve never heard and I spent forty years in the radio business. When I want a particular type of music I tune to one of the channels that offers what I want only to hear something completely out of left field. I’ve checked with Whitborn only to find the tune either didn’t chart or charted in so low it was never played on any radio station. When it comes to Country I cannot judge, but pop and rock is where I earned my living for many years. It felt terrific to be a part of a Radio Hall of Fame (Ohio) induction ceremony that was so exclusive and intimate. Just thought I’d get a discussion started…maybe. Chuck D.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Although rumors for years suggest that Rock group Alice Cooper comes up with their name after they consult a Ouija board, lead singer Vincent Furnier reveals in an interview with VH1 TV series Behind The Music: I remember we were sitting around talking about band names. I was eating Doritos and just said the first name that came to mind. Which was Alice Cooper. Vincent Damon Furnier is born on February 4, 1948 in Detroit, MI. In 1965 he forms Rock band Alice Cooper in Phoenix, AZ with himself as lead singer along with band members Glen Buxton (guitar), Michael Bruce (keyboards), Dennis Dunaway (bass) and Neil Smith (drums). Alice Cooper’s first major hit record is School’s Out in summer 1972.
