DJ WHO STARTS ROCK AND ROLL NO LONGER WELCOME JRRR friend and contributor, Don Sundeen, who is a former Hi records recording artist promoter during my time as Music Director and DJ on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in 1975 points out that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH no longer wants Alan Freed’s ashes kept there. To us music and radio lovers this is quite upsetting because it is Alan Freed who is the charismatic radio DJ who popularizes the term Rock & Roll. Plus, in the early 1950s, it is Alan Freed who starts doing Rock & Roll concerts and dances. Freed’s ambience is one of the reasons why the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s base is in Cleveland. Yes, like Bob Dylan says: the times they are a changin’.
EVACUATION OF CINCINNATI TV ANCHORS The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that WXIX TV CH 19 morning anchor Jacki Jing is no longer with the Queen of the West FOX affiliate. WXIX TV quickly removes Jing’s bio from its website. Jacki posts a photo of a sunset to her social page. WXIX TV GM Bill Lanesey confirms with the Enquirer that Jin no longer is with the station. The anchor change at CH 19 is the latest in a long list of TV departures this summer, which brings many new faces to Cincinnati airwaves this fall. Also gone are Kit Andrews (CH 12) and Larry Handley, Sarah Walters and Amy Wadas (CH 9). Clyde Gray retires as Channel 9′s main co-anchor later this month and I-Team reporter Brendan Keefe leaves CH 9 in September 2014 for Atlanta, GA TV.
ANDY LANDS ON HIS FEET Remember the huge uproar after SiriusXM fires one-half of The Opie & Anthony Show, Anthony Cumia, for his series of Tweets with racially charged messages after his fracas with a black female in Times Square? Anthony is the former half of The Opie & Anthony Show with his partner Gregg [Opie] Hughes. Cumia tells The Blaze that he’s completely free of any contractual ties to SiriusXM: They don’t have a leg to stand on as far as what I want to talk about. I can talk about any of the staff, the management over there and believe me, I will. Cumia tells The Blaze that he’s pleased with the number of O&A fans who cancel their SiriusXM subscriptions as a result of his firing…the subscriptions to his show surpass his initial target.

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim, “The Curtiss Knot Hole Gang Club” (WBAP TV) was the 30 minute kids’ baseball program I was hosting before the home games of the Dallas Eagles and the Fort Worth Cats. It was sponsored by the candy company that makes Babe Ruth and Butterfinger candy bars. I was dressed as a candy hawker, and interviewed kid baseball players and ad libbed candy commercials. It was all right off the top of my head…nothing scripted, so I just did my thing and had a fling with the TV camera. I knew from moment one that TV was my calling. Finally to KONO-AM as a news anchor, and then in June, ’61, my good luck to “substitute” on “12 Star Final” when the anchorman quit suddenly, and they asked me to fill in. Once on TV, I never got off again. Tom

CHUCK DUNAWAY [former DJ on WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) The last thing they did before releasing us yesterday was check for clots in the legs. With the test they say both legs are clot free. That is a great feeling. Yes, air is coming back and I’m adding two more medication to my daily dosage it is the famous steroid month long dosage plus a prescribed sleeping aid called Ambien. Dr. Shah thinks Kendall and I can travel by plane by October. Now that I’m finally on the mend and expect no further complications with Bronchitis, sleep deprivation, high anxiety, breathing and blood clots etc. I’m feeling much better and hope to be able to travel to Austin by car in the next couple of months. I’m attempting a treadmill walk this morning and I’ll let you know how it goes. This will be the only real treadmill test in over three months. Love to all. Chucky Boo Boo

RICK UPTON (San Antonio, TX) San Antonio a great city to use as a negotiating tool for Major Sports teams. The city and people will support any major league sport in Spades! But will also get too excited over what will inevitably not happen. Oh well, we do have the Spurs and everyone else can bite us! Hope joe (Miller) didn’t miss up your computer too much. TONY BRIDGE [2010 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee] (Fort Worth-Benbrook, TX) Subject: Wonderful new format design. For folks like myself with diminished eyesight, your new format is God sent. Same great content, now much easier to see.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Born and raised in small Southern petroleum industry town Port Arthur, TX Janis Joplin shakes up the Rock music scene. In 1968, Janis brags: I never listened to radio, I didn’t never get into that rock-and-roll trip. I just listened to blues. It seemed real. The other stuff seemed so tacky, teenagey. It didn’t seem to have any truth in it or something. From the first moment I ever heard [the blues] that was my music. But, it is radio that makes her world famous with hits like Me And Bobby McGee which is #1 for two weeks in 1971. On October 4, 1970 Janis Joplin dies in Hollywood, CA of a heroin ovrerdose.
