ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
WE LOSE ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST BELOVED COMEDIANS Our most favorite Robin Williams movie is his 1987 film Good Morning, Vietnam. Robin stars in many wonderful movies like Good Will Hunting. Robin’s rise in fame comes from his role as Mork the alien in the TV show Mork & Mindy which is a Happy Days spinoff. Many of us sing I’m happy on the outside but cryin’ on the inside and there’s nothin’ I can do. For years, the 63 year old Williams suffers from depression. On Tuesday, August 12, 2014 sheriff’s officials report that famed comedian Robin Williams dies of asphyxia in his San Francisco Bay Area home. Robin Williams death is unbelievable. We expect to see Robin jump out from behind a curtain and yell: It’s not true! It’s all a joke! Here I am!

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN [ex WCKY-1530] (Cincinnati, OH) So like you I love my doggies and enjoy reading your newsletters of Radio memories. Mike McConnell, who after a 25 year career at WLW-AM, left there in 2010 for Chicago’s WGN-AM for a Talk Show Host position. Well he quit that job in October to move back to Cincinnati to be close to his girlfriend and daughter. Totally out of radio since then but now will be a substitute host for regular WlLW Talk Show Hosts Scott Sloan and Bill Cunningham. It’s Sloan he’s filling in for first, who will be on vacation. Then if Cunningham takes some vacation days, he’ll fill in then too. McConnell is also planning to start a website and a podcast. The podcast he’ll do for one hour a day, five days a week, short-term or long-term. He’s obviously still job searching, hoping another Cincinnati radio job will open up over time. Thanks Again Mary Lynn Knochelman

JAY WEST [KILT-610/KODA FM/KRIO-910] (Houston, TX) OK Jim, you asked for it. My radio background in a nutshell. I began on air radio duties while still a senior in high school in Mexico City at XEL. They broadcast in English 5 hours daily (7-9am, 7-10pm) every day. From there I ended up at KRIO-am in McAllen, Texas (The Rio Grande Valley) for 11 years as nighttime dj to becoming the PD for the last five years there. Then, I got THE call from KILT-am from Bill Young and boy was I ready. I replaced Rick Shaw who went on to NY, I think. This, I believe was the outcome from being nominated Small Market DJ of the year in 1971 at the Bill Gavin Radio Convention held in New Orleans. I didn’t win but the nomination had a lot of pull. At the same time KILT called, I was contacted by KNBR, San Francisco and a station in Florida somewhere. Incidentally, the winner of the Gavin Convention that year was Gary Burbank of WAKY, Louisville, KY. I have much more to relate but not in this space. Footnote: following my KILT stint ( 5 years) I created Jay West Productions, commercial recording studio in Houston for 29 years. This should fill up some space this week. Thanks for all you do Jim. (BTW, I never worked at KLIF, Dallas). ‘Ol Jay

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Subject: What WGN 720 Handles one of their own. I can hear WGN after 11PM from my Cabin in the woods. Sound like the talent on the air from WGN 720 Chicago is having a conversation in my living room and it feels comforting. Though not feeling comfortable with what WGN did with Gary (Meier). Leslie
TRIVIA ANSWER: Singer-songwriter and poet influential component of the New York City Punk Rock movement Patti Smith says in 1977: Rock ‘n’ roll is hard work, it’s harder than being in the army. And your guitar is your machine gun; tour instruments are your implements of battle. Patti Smith who is born Patricia Lee Smith on December 30, 1946 in Chicago, IL some people call the Godmother of Punk single co-written with Bruce Springsteen Because the Night scores #13 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1978.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) The next was a Cocker Spaniel. A cousin of mine is a vet, she asked whether we would like a puppy. My mother tells her let others have the first choice. Anyway, a few days later. My cousin calls and says can we be at Love field to get a puppy. We kept it until it had heart problems and hips were going out. He had gone blind but the vet had said just leave things in place and see whether he can get around. So we did and that lasted for about 4 more years. Funny thing was when it was 10 pm, he would let us know we needed to go to bed. He also had a way of making the sheets up by rolling them in place. How much is that doggy in the window… Charles George, KC5RAI
AGNES SLIGH TURNBULL (October 14, 1888 – January 31, 1982) Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.
