ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
SURVIVOR DOES NOT SURVIVE Rolling Stone reports that Jimi Jamison is Rock group Survivor’s lead singer from 1984 until 1988. In 1984, after the break-up of his first band, Cobra, Jamison becomes Survivor’s lead singer. He powers such hits as The Moment of Truth from The Karate Kid, High On You, I Can’t Hold Back, Is This Love and Burning Heart from Rocky IV. But, Jamison is not the lead singer on Survivor’s signature hit, 1984’s Grammy-winning Eye of the Tiger. That voice is Survivor’s original lead singer, David Bickler, who has to leave the group after he develops polyps on his vocal chords shortly after recording the song. Jimi Jamison passes away at 63 from a heart attack on Sunday, August 31, 2014.

DIAMOND EXITS SAN DIEGO QUICKLY On August 18, 2014 Radio Ink reports Jack Diamond moves from Washington DC to San Diego, CA to Classic Hits XHPRS FM (Max FM 105.7) Tijuana-San Diego, CA to join Norm Feur, Kim Morrison and producer Kayla Yap on the morning show. But after only two weeks it’s hit the road Jack because he says he cannot find the school he wants for his son and housing is notoriously expensive in San Diego. He cannot make the personal pieces fit in California and moves back to DC. Bulletin! www.SanDiegoRadio.org source says that Jack Diamond decides to accept the offer from WLS FM (94.7) Chicago. If you remember 2 weeks ago Jack refuses WLS FM Morning offer and signs with XHPRS FM but now he changes his mind.
VIPER MUNCHES REDSKINS OWNER’S RADIO LICENSE Will it ever end? University law professor John Banzhaf brags to Radio Ink that he officially challenges the license renewal of Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder’s Red Zebra WWXX FM which simulcasts Sports WTEM-980 (ESPN 980) in Washington, DC. WWXX is one of seven radio stations that belong to Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder who refuses to change the name of his NFL team. Banzhaf claims that the use of the word Redskins is racist and this is another way to put pressure on Snyder to change the name of the team. So, he follows through on his threat to challenge the license of one of Daniel Snyder’s Red Zebra radio stations.
EXTREME DOWNSIZING AT HOME Last week Steven Grisaffe who owns a vinyl record shop in New Iberia, LA purchases my 6000 record collection. The 2000 LPs are inside 20 wooden cubes. Must remove the 20 wooden cubes ASAP. Also, my tall 5 shelf white bookcase with about 250 books. Most of the books are like brand new. They include first editions, books about Elvis Presley, books written by political leaders as well as some by big folks in TV and the movies and many cook books. Plus a set of World Book encyclopedias and a like brand new leather bound set of Time Life books about the Old West. All of the books and cases must be gone ASAP. No offer will be refused. Please pass the word. If interested please email at Rosekkj@earthlink.net. Thank you.

DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Russ Knight Story. Don’t know if this story is true; but the guy that told me – swears to it! The Weird Beard ( Russ Knight ) be-friended “Jack Ruby” in Dallas ( Old KLIF Studios -downtown Bldg.) Ruby would come up and sit in the Studio with “Russ” while he was doing his. He talked about Kennedy to Russ and his feelings about Lee Harvey, and the rest of course is in the History books. DM

BILL HILL [P/GM KSET-1300] (Beaumont/Port Arthur, TX) Subject: Hal McClain. Hal McClain had the fatal plane crash at an airshow in Kerrville. I understand he was attempting an outside loop when he crashed, which was supposedly a high risk maneuver. I was sales manager of KRBE (FM) when it happened. I am not sure, but I don’t think we (KENR-1070) had combined sales efforts yet. We were in the same building on Westheimer, near Gessner either before, or slightly after it happened. I don’t recall hearing ANYTHING about alcohol being a factor in the crash. I do recall Ric Libby doing some shows on KENR to commemorate Hal. Best Regards!
JAY WALKER [ex-KLUV HD-2/KSNN/KYNG/KEGL/WLS-FM etc] (DFW, TX) Hi Jim, I enjoy each and every issue you send and open and read away the minute you hit my in box. I wanted to pass along a little “What if” pipe dream your way to ponder. Wouldn’t it be GREAT with Disney selling the remainder of their Disney Radio AM outlets, If they would chose to sell at a discount to broadcasters committed to LIVE and LOCAL? Think of what a good operator could do with the excellent engineered AM 620 Dallas built by Jack Selmeyer. It would be such a shame for this signal to end up in the hands of yet another “Pay and Play” broker, Religious or Ethnic broadcaster in DFW. I have no bias against Religious or Ethnic broadcasters (Pay and Play is another matter) but there’s a serious glut (roughly 26 on the AM band alone) all fed national formats via satellite in the DFW market. While at best there are mere handful of locally owned/programmed live and local stations. Most of the “Mom and Pop” stations are low power operations yet there are excellent examples of Live and Local programming. KPYK 1570 Terrell (standards), KGAF 1580 Gainesville (AC), and KJIM 1500 in Sherman (variety/standards) and sadly that’s about it…Keep up the great work sir… Respectfully yours, Jay Walker – Owner Jay Walker Productions

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Consequences of radio stations without GM’s. “Life is the beautiful joke that is always happening.” Sounds kinda like flying an airplane with no one in the cockpit. Another ramification of the bean counters taking over the radio business. However, I must admit that along the way I met some guys in the corner office that it was difficult to determine what they really did.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In the 1950s & 1960s, Country singer Eddy Arnold has over 20 songs in Billboard’s Pop chart including Make The World Go Away (#6-1965). Joel Whitburn’s Top Country Singles book shows Eddy has 145 Country hits from 1945-83. In 1966, Eddy Arnold inducts into the Country Music Hall of Fame. On May 8th, 2008, he perishes one week before his 90th birthday.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: 1997-2000 @ KNUZ (1090-Bellville, TX) Facility. We were on Westwood Satellite playing Fleetwood Mac Hits and Ebony Eyes. The fee to Westwood one is bartered. Roy (Henderson) did not want AM 1090. Roy wanted 92.3FM. The FM Frequency that was not on air nothing no transmitter but to get 92.3FM Roy had to agree to buy AM 1090 KNUZ. so it was basically just on the air while I did what I could creatively to make it sound major with nothing to work with no money.
