KYTV TV’S FIRST ANCHOR PERISHES KYTV TV CH 3 Springfield, MO’s first News Anchor, Jerry Higley, dies at 92 on Monday, September 15, 2014. In 1953, Springfield NBC affiliate KYTV TV launches its very first newscast at 6 pm, just over an hour after it signs on the air on October 1, 1953. Jerry Higley, well-known radio broadcaster, is KYTV TV’s News Anchor. Higley reports on the marriage of Senator John F. Kennedy to Jacqueline Bouvier. As the planning and construction of KYTV TV is underway, Higley is one of the first 20 employees that the Cox family hires. Jerry is in the news department along with news director Dick Heinline, weathercaster and program director Carl Fox, sports anchor Don Payton and 10 pm newscast anchor Dave Estes.

YAKIMA RADIO LOSES ITS DJS One good thing is that Ingstad Radio KRSE FM Washington flips its Variety Hits 105.7 Bob FM lid in Yakima, WA to Classic Rock 105.7 The Hawk. This is good because the wonderful Classic Rock format seems to die way too early because the digital decade brings forth other means to listen to music. The MP3 file yanks music free from physical formats entirely, and the number of ways fans can experience music has exploded. Suddenly, everything about the way we listen to music is different. KRSE FM brands itself as No Talk, Just Rock. This indicates that KRSE FM retains its jockless Bob format. So, a machine runs KRSE FM with no live announcers or local input.
PIRATES INVADE BROOKLYN Kate Briquelet of the New York Post reports there’s an invasion of pirate stations in Brooklyn. She says that according to the FCC, 25 percent of the nation’s pirate stations are in New York City. There are Caribbean, Hebrew, and shock-jock stations hijacking the airwaves. Ike Hull of Sunset Park tracks pirates with his live Twitter feed, https://twitter.com/BkPirateWatch. Hull tells Briquelet: I’m fascinated by the pirates. Especially…their ability to get support from advertisers who…don’t care that they’re advertising on illegal stations. We have also heard an ad for personal injury lawyer Alan Ross http://alanrosspc.com on Radio Independence FM. Does he know this is illegal?
MARTHA STEWART VS GWYNETH PALTROW In this corner is Martha Stewart and in this corner is Gwyneth Paltrow. Yes, this duel has come down to a boxing match between a TV Talk host and a movie star. FishbowlNY reports that Martha Stewart has had it with Gwyneth Paltrow. Stewart scoffs that no one can be her except her. Stewart snaps: She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart. This isn’t the first time that Stewart complains about what she believes is actresses who strive to be like her. Martha attacks Blake Lively’s lifestyle site Preserve: Why would you want to be me if you could be an actress? Someone needs to introduce Martha Stewart to Yoga.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Where does the name Cannibal and the Headhunters originate? The answer appears below.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-Carlsbad, CA) I was thinking the other day while listening to early morning KSON our local country station. The radio experience of the good old days wasn’t just a great public entertainment and info experience. It was an art form and the jocks and personalities such as the late “weird beard, ‘the Real Don Steel, the Arch Yanceys, Paul Berlins, Joe Fords and all the other great Jocks of yesterday were as much artists as the performers on the records they played. Yes it was a by gone art form that seemingly vanished overnight. It’s still around in small markets, and it’s still the best of today’s radio. Just a thought. Have a good one. [www.chuckcashmere.com]

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Joe Sample. I see that the Pianist Joe Sample died tonight in Houston at the age of 75. He was with the group the Jazz Crusaders, they then changed their name to Crusaders and were playing more Pop-oriented material. I liked a song they did when I was at ETSU, Commerce, in 1971: Put It Where You Want It. KC5RAI

Country music star George Hamilton IV has been hospitalized in the Nashville area suffering a heart attack, according to the Grand Ole Opry. Opry officials described Hamilton’s heart attack as serious and asked for prayers for him on their Twitter and Facebook pages. Hamilton, 77, first became an Opry member in 1960 and is described as an “international ambassador of country music.” Additional information about Hamilton was not immediately available. Hits include: “Abilene”; “Ft. Worth, Dallas, Or Houston”; “Truck Drivin’ Man”; “Early Morning Rain”.
