ENTERCOM PAYS PORN STAR $1M A woman sues Entercom’s KRBZ FM (The Buzz 96.5) Kansas City, MO because it falsely identifies her as a porn star in a 2012 broadcast. On Friday, September 26, 2014 a jury rules against KRBZ FM in the porn star case. Entercom issues a statement: While we are very disappointed in the outcome, we will abide by the jury’s verdict. A jury awards the woman $250,000 in actual damages and another $750,000 in punitive damages. Radio Ink fills us in: In a 2012 broadcast, KRBZ FM confuses the woman’s name with that of another individual; all sides agreed she has never been involved in the pornography industry and Entercom’s defense was ‘We made a mistake’.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GOES WAY TOO FAR Since George Washington Law Professor John Banzhaf files a claim with the FCC that the name Redskins violates federal rules, three Commissioners join in to pressure Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to change its mascot name. During the FCC’s vote to kill the sports blackout rules, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler says that he finds the word Redskins offensive. The FCC ends its sanctioned authority for pro football to blackout football games if the local venue is not sold out. On Tuesday, September 30, 2014 the Federal Communications Commission ends its 39-year-old sports blackout rule by a unanimous five to zero vote. Hurray!
BENNETT MOVES ON UP Dan Bennett VP/Market Manager of Cumulus’ seven-station Dallas, TX cluster since 2006 moves on up to Regional Vice President to keep an eye on Cumulus’ radio station operations in both Dallas and Houston. In 2006, when Cumulus acquires the assets of Susquehanna Radio, Bennett rises to VP/Market Manager of Cumulus’ seven-station Dallas, TX cluster. Dan’s role expands in Big D again when Cumulus takes ownership of the former ABC Radio stations from Citadel Media. And now Dan Bennett climbs another rung at Cumulus Media all the way up to Regional Vice President. Cumulus takes current KCTK-1310 SportsRadio simulcast signal KTDK-1150 Sanger, TX (about 60 miles north of the Dallas metro) dark, returns its license to the FCC.
BIG CHANGES IN EL PASO TV Sinclair El Paso, TX duopoly general manager, Kevin Hayes, promises plenty of changes both on air and off. KFOX TV has a young audience while KDBC TV draws older viewers. KFOX will have a new news set, and much bigger studio than at its current, years-old location at 6004 N. Mesa. But it will continue to have fast-paced, investigative-leaning newscasts. It is the same brand, but different news operations. El Paso Fox affiliate KFOX TV CH 14 and CBS affiliate KDBC TV CH 4 will merge under one roof in a new Sinclair-built facility in late September 2014. Hayes tells El Paso Times: The challenge is to build the CBS4 news product that doesn’t cannibalize the KFOX news audience.

DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Harrell Banks. JIMMY – Yes I did – he (Tom East) told me the first day I was in the Turner Complex with him and Tom Allison!!!!! He told me he caught her (wife) with another man – killed her and drove his car to the Air-port and then took a bus to hire a attorney! His catch phrase to everyone at KBUC was – Merry Christmas then he kiss the women!!!!!!!! TOM was character. We worked the Chili-cook -offs together. He also did the Baseball Games for Turner as Harrell once told me; when you hired Tom East – YOU get a Million dollars in PR. I remember he also introduced me to a Blond name “Duckie”. I think they may have been a item at one time!!!!!! He was married when I worked with him. Dave
JAY WEST [KILT-610/KODA FM/KRIO-910] (Houston, TX) Hi Jim… I’m sure disposing of your RECORD library was not easy to handle. I recall when my brother was working with me at my studio (Jay West Productions) at One Westchase Center on Westheimer, he used my small studio in the back for a syndicated radio show he did called “Waxworks” (which, by the way was in over 200 radio stations in the 1990’s) where he had a library of well over 1500 lp’s. His show was of the big band era…anyway when it began to slip away, and he was ready to retire, he sold his entire lp library to someone in Missouri who drove down to Houston to pick it up. Sold it for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of it. See how much we have in common ?? Jay
JAY WALKER (DFW-Chambersville, TX) Jim I didn’t find a picture on Lynn’s site with issue #1341 but I did find a beautiful picture on issue #1340! That is a gorgeous girl!!!! Very “Regal”, “Proud” and looks as smart as all get out… We are dog and cat people as well. 5 indoor cats and three dogs. All our dogs and cats are “strays that came to stay”. We live out in the country and rescue a lot of dumped dogs. Sadly there are “individuals” who think dogs/cats etc are disposable. That type of cruelty is one of the few things that makes me have violent thoughts. I cannot understand the type of “mind and soul” that would do that to a living creature. Goodnight for now. Take care… Jay Walker – Owner Jay Walker Productions Dallas

MIKE MARSHALL [WFAA 570/820-KPRC-950-KQUE FM] (Houston, TX) My last show (WFAA 820/570) was the Saturday before Labor Day, 1969. I played Streisand’s “Don’t Like Goodbyes” with lyrics by, of all people, Truman Capote. I don’t know how long they stayed with a music format after that and I don’t know who replaced me 7-midnight. Bobby B. went into sales, I think just before I left and went from there to sales at KRLD-TV. I called him on a trip to Dallas a few years later to try to get together with him but he basically told me he didn’t have time for me. Mike Marshall WFAA 570/820 1967-69
TRIVIA ANSWER: After they record The Letter, Memphis, TN R&B group The DeVilles decide that they need a name change. One band member suggests: Let’s have a contest and everybody can send in 50 cents and a box top. Box Tops sounds like a great name so it sticks. The Box Tops single The Letter scores #1 in fall 1967 and remains at the top of the chart for four weeks. Their single Cry Like a Baby wins #2 and remains there for two weeks.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Night Time is the Right Time. At night I have been enjoying Classic Country 1680, Monroe. they put in a solid signal at night. They almost have a good enough signal to sound like a local. Also I have been getting a station billing itself as WILD 940. It has Gospel Programming. I think it is WYLD but not sure since it fades at ID time. Here is me playing a Communion Hymn on my Violin. Best Regards, Charles P. S. Trying to decide whether I want to go the State Fair this year. This past Sunday at the Freeman heard Javier Gutierrez with Mosaic. I also pickup a CD by him called Imagen on it he plays the flute and saxophone. He does Afro-Cuban Jazz. Charles George KC5RAI
JIM MACNIE [Downbeat magazine] Love it when a working band gets captured on a hot night.
