ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
MAD MAN OF ROCK AND ROLL ROCKS NO MORE In our history classes teachers instruct us that in 1775, a Massachusetts silversmith, Paul Revere, rides his steed and yells that the British are coming. Ironically, almost 200 years later, the British do come again and another Paul Revere, an Idaho keyboardist, Rocks America with his band, the Raiders. Paul’s Raiders raid America in 18th century military uniforms with a musical foothold during the second British Invasion. In the mid-1960s, Paul Revere and his Raiders bring us hits like Just Like Me, Kicks, Hungry and Good Thing. Their only #1 tune is Indian Reservation. Paul Revere Dick, The Madman of Rock & Roll, dies at 76 from cancer on Saturday, October 4, 2014 in his home in Garden Valley, ID.

HOUSTON SHELVES FM RADIO NEWS Once a tower of strength on the AM dial, around 2011, News and or News/Talk formats begin to pop up on the FM signal. We folks in radio know the importance of promotion. Otherwise, how do listeners know that we exist? One of the comments in the KROI FM (92.1) Houston’s News shutdown story tells it all: I’ve lived in Houston for 30 years and I don’t think I have ever heard of 92FM. Just after 9 am Wednesday, October 8, 2014 KROI FM informs its 47 employees that they are no longer needed. Longtime radio news anchors J.P. Prichard, Lana Hughes, Mike Barajas, Bonnie Petrie and Lanny Griffith all leave the building.
KLIF FM IS HOT Cumulus flips Top 40 KLIF FM (93.3) Dallas, TX to HOT 93.3. Cumulus Regional VP Dan Bennett is now hot on the trail for a new crew of expendable radio goats. Bennett brags: The new HOT 93.3 will bring to Dallas Metroplex listeners the next generation of contemporary music. We are incredibly excited about how it will serve both our listeners and advertisers. Exactly what is Hot radio? Cumulus says it means bumper-to-bumper thumper rap from the likes of Iggy Azalea, Pitbull, Ariana Grande and others in KLIF FM’s new format. Those of us Oldies but Goodies in Dallas radio remember well the Mighty 11-90 KLIF-1190 that we all listen to from the 1950s-70s.
DELAUNE GAINS MORE FAME During the 1950s and 1960s growing up in Dallas, TX we marvel at the Mighty 11-90 KLIF’s powerful DJs plus the impact that its dramatic newscasters have on our lives. One of those newscasters is Gary DeLaune. Later, Gary takes his talents to Houston on KNUZ-1230 and KQUE FM. Next he journeys to San Antonio where for 28 years he is a reporter, producer and sports anchor on KENS TV CH 5. Over the years DeLaune wins numerous awards and titles. But we whole heartedly congratulate our good friend Gary DeLaune for his latest achievement. On Monday, October 6, 2014 81 year old Gary DeLaune joins the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at the Dominion Country Club. Bravo! (http://www.garydnews.com/)

JAY WEAVER (KCUL-KBUY, 1540, Fort Worth – KPCN, 730, Grand Prairie and other places) Subject: Bo Powell. Hi Jim – Just a short noted to let you know that Bo Powell has passed away. He was found in his home yesterday evening about 5:30 PM by a friend. No other information is available now, but I’ll let you know when I have more information. You remember Bo from KCUL and KBUY in Fort Worth. He also had a short stint at KCLE-KTFW in Cleburne. I don’t know where else he may have worked. He is probably best remembered as the person who introduced The Pride Of Country Music, Charlie Pride, Live, when the famous live album was cut at Panther Hall in Fort Worth in 1969 when Charlie was known as “Country Charlie Pride”. TONY WILLIAMS [ex WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Kevin Metheny, KGO program director. Kevin Metheny was two years younger than I. His father was Terrell Metheny who programmed a number of stations (although not as many as Kevin). Terrell was programming WMCA, a top-40 station in New York before it went all talk and about the time Kevin was at WKY. One day, Kevin said I want you to hear some airchecks of my father when he was in Nashville. He obviously was proud of his dad.

DAVID FAULKNER [ex KTNS-1600] (Dallas, TX) Subject: News 92 FM. Jim, Here’s something I posted on Facebook while thinking about the demise of Houston’s News 92 FM: Sorry to hear of Houston’s News 92 FM folding this morning. Sounds like the entire staff was let go at 9am. Best wishes to each of them. The newstalk station I worked at years ago ended in much the same way and for the same reasons. At 9am on a Friday everyone was notified that the station had sold and that it was their last day of employment. But they weren’t all escorted from the building as I hear happened at News 92. That day’s programming went on as normal. Almost. A mic was hung over the toilet in the restroom near the production room. At midnight, just before sign off, the sound of it flushing was the last thing heard on the airwaves of Talkradio 1600 KTNS. http://news92fm.com/485116/special-message-from-news-92-fm Best to you, David Faulkner
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Spent an evening with Paul (Revere) and a 6 pack of Bud one night after a show during the “Where the Action is ” period. While Mark Lindsey cavorted up and down the floor, Paul and I sat and sipped beers talking business, because he was primarily a business man and the most down to earth guy in the rock star business. He was no more a ‘mad man,’ than Alice Cooper, and both men understood the importance of putting on a show. He’d made-up the whole Revere and the Raiders deal, playing off his name and wearing Revolutionary War attire, and at that point he’d just started making good money. Paul was happily married, had just bought a place in the Valley, and a new Mustang, he was looking forward to putting in a pool. I was privileged to spend time with a lot of well known performers, but Paul was one of the nicest and most real. It is sad to see him pass just when he and his beloved wife of 35 years Sydney, who also has health problems, finally were able to settle down at their beautiful home in the Idaho countryside.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo-Abilene, TX) RIP: Paul Revere (raiders) @76 ystdy, 10/4/14. A celebrity death! TRIVIA ANSWER: From 1967-68 when I’m a DJ on Dallas, TX flame thrower WFAA-820 we spin The Association tunes Cherish (#1 for three weeks 1966), Windy (#1 for four weeks 1967) and Never My Love (#2 for two weeks 1967). After thirteen member band The Men breaks up someone suggests The Aristocrats as a name for their new group. Singer-songwriter Terry Kirkman’s wife searches the dictionary to locate a better name than The Aristocrats. On the same page is The Association.
ART DONOVAN (June 5, 1924 – August 4, 2013) You know you’re big when you sit in the bathtub and the water in the toilet rises.
