IS THERE A SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE CURSE? How many names of the dearly departed SNL cast members do we remember? Probably the first is John Belushi (1975–79). Andy Kaufman who appears on the very first episode of Saturday Night Live in October 1975. Plus, Gilda Radner (1975–80), Michael O’Donoghue (1975-78), Charles Rocket (1980–81), Phil Hartman (1986–94) and Chris Farley (1990–95). Former Saturday Night Live cast member Jan Hooks, during her five-years on SNL from 1986–1991, performs impersonations all the way from Nancy Reagan to Tammy Faye Bakker. Jan Hooks, a Decatur, GA native, who receives an Emmy Award-nomination for 3rd Rock From the Sun dies at 57 on Thursday, October 9, 2014 in New York.

NY COP BASHES REPORTER These days being a reporter in Gotham City is hazardous to one’s health. Here’s a lesson that authorities never seem to grasp or maybe they just opt to forget: Yes, we really can shoot video in public places. On Tuesday, October 10, 2014 in Park Slope, a school safety officer approaches Time Warner Cable’s NY1 reporter Lindsey Christ as she attempts to interview a student across the street. The NYPD school safety officer demands that she not be put on camera. When NY1′s Lindsey Christ asks why, the officer breaks off the lens hood from her camera. The law states that a person may film the NYPD at any point. Lindsey says: When we got the camera lens guards back on, she puts her hat over the lens.
BUFFALO SURRENDERS TWO REPORTERS It’s a shoot out at CBS affiliate WIVB TV CH 4 stockade in Buffalo, NY when it loses two of its reporters. On Wednesday, October 8, 2014 the Buffalo News reports that Ed Drantch will exit the LIN-owned station in November 2014 to move to cross-town rival ABC affiliate WKBW TV. CH 7 General Manager Mike Nurse says that’s when Drantch’s CH 4 contract expires: CH 4 has the right to match CH 7’s offer but declines. On Thursday The News reports that Rachel Kingston flees broadcasting for a position at the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. TV Critic Alan Pergament has a hunch that WIVB GM Rene LaSpina‘s belt tightening might be behind the moves.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Where is radio headed? Hello again, Jim: Yes, I do remember the market pie being big enough to accommodate at least one station of most any format…here, it was WHBQ and WMPS battling it out…we always won! I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that we were battling it out for #2; WDIA, the nation’s first black format station was always solid #1, and rightly so; they did exactly what the FCC said do; they served the listeners…Memphis was 38% black in those days, and all 38% were WDIA fans…B.B. King, Rufus Thomas, and others got their start there as deejays. Jack Parnell

JAY WEAVER (KCUL/KBUY-1540, KPCN-730) (Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Bo Powell. Hi Jim – Just a short noted to let you know that Bo Powell has passed away. He was found in his home yesterday evening about 5:30 PM by a friend. No other information is available now, but I’ll let you know when I have more information. You remember Bo from KCUL and KBUY in Fort Worth. He also had a short stint at KCLE-KTFW in Cleburne. I don’t know where else he may have worked. He is probably best remembered as the person who introduced The Pride Of Country Music, Charlie Pride, Live, when the famous live album was cut at Panther Hall in Fort Worth in 1969 when Charlie was known as “Country Charlie Pride”. Jay Weaver (KCUL-KBUY, 1540, Fort Worth – KPCN, 730, Grand Prairie and other places)
BO POWELL in the mid 1960s has a pet goat at the KPCN-730 transmitter site in Grand Prairie, TX. Also, he is one of several KPCN-730 DJs who fill in as MC of Panther Hall Live broadcasts on KTVT CH 11 Dallas, TX. Bo is the MC on RCA’s Live at Panther Hall LP starring Willie Nelson that features one of my favorite Willie tunes I Never Cared for You.

JOHN HALE (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio October 10, 2014 [Friday] Issue #1345 Jim, reference your story about the demise of News 92 F-M, it’s a shame when so many talented people put so much effort into creating a quality product on-air, only to see that effort wasted because the station wasn’t properly promoted, and possibly because people these days just don’t get their news from radio, TV, and newspapers nearly as much as they once did. I worked for J.P. Pritchard back in the day at the old KULF, and I knew several of the folks at News 92, as friends on Facebook and through the fact I did traffic for the station weekends from Total Traffic in Dallas. News 92 had a solid staff of professionals, and most will likely land on their feet with other gigs, but being an old news hound myself, I consider any market the poorer when a news-talk station is silenced. There are a lot of things I loved about my days in radio, but the lack of stability and security wasn’t one of those things, and I’m really sorry when I hear that good people, through no fault of their own, are out on the street. John Hale
TRIVIA ANSWER: Ed Ames is born on July 9, 1927 in Malden, MA. His birth name is Edmund Dantes Urick. Ed, Vic, Gene and Joe are sons of Ukrainian Jewish parents. In 1947 in Boston, MA the brothers form the singing group The Ames Brothers whose hit record is It Only Hurts for a Little While (1956). Ed Ames goes solo with a string of wonderful ballads: Try to Remember (1965), Time, Time (1967), When the Snow is on the Roses (1967), My Cup Runneth Over (1967) and Who Will Answer? (1968). On TV Ed plays Mingo on the 1964 NBC series Daniel Boone.
JAY WALKER (DFW-Chambersville, TX) Subject: Just a quick howdy!!! Jim Glad you are getting WP tamed. I would not have the patience to deal with it for sure. My patience and attention span are both very short these days. Seriously, it’s too bad that Word Press does not have an “import” function so you could import straight from MS Office into Word Press. Heck even being able to import from plain old MS Notepad would be better than having to rework the entire text if you happen to make a mistake… About the only thing I have patience for and the proper amount of attention is restoration of my old (sometimes called boat anchors) Ham Radio equipment. I really enjoy making that old stuff play. My “everyday” station consists of a WRL Globe King 500 watt transmitter manufactured in 1955 and the receiver is an RME 4350 made in 1957 by, of all people, Electro-Voice. I never knew Electro-Voice was in the receiver business. I learn something new everyday…
