STRANGER ON THE SHORE IS NO MORE Boy what a great tune! In 1962, during my senior year at the brand new Kimball high school in Dallas, TX British clarinetist Acker Bilk known for his goatee, bowler hat and fancy waistcoat chills and thrills us with his magnificent instrumental tune Stranger on the Shore. Acker’s woodwind instrument sounds smooth as silk. Bilk writes Stranger on the Shore for clarinet for his young daughter Jenny and names the tune after her. After it becomes the theme song of BBC TV drama serial Stranger on the Shore this emerges as the new title of the song. The legendary Jazz clarinetist Mr. Acker Bilk dies at 85 in a hospital in Bath, southwestern England. He leaves behind his wife Jean, daughter Jenny and son Pete.

KENT BURKHART [legendary radio programmer/consultant with Burkhart-Abrams] (Miami/Key Biscayne, FL) Yes, After I did a short stint as a dj with Storz in Omaha, and before I was appointment program director of Storz in Miami I worked for Earl Fletcher (KXOL-1360) as Program Director (for six months or less), and did the morning show. It was my second time to work at KXOL, because when I was at TCU I did the night show starting at 10 (or earlier if minor league baseball was over for the evening) and weekend remotes. That was basically all in the mid fifty’s to the early sixties. I thought someone might have an air check of yours truly by chance. KB. Great to hear from you, and I am hopeful that my KXOL friend and associate (we both worked at KXOL at the same time) Chuck Dunaway is up soon. Kent Burkhart

BRUCE ELROD [Cash Box & Record World owner/publisher] (Ridgeway, SC) Subject: Today’s Almost Forgotten Oldie–“Music Box Dancer”. Oh, one more memorable footnote on “Music Box Dancer.” The record was playing one day on the Durkee family’s stereo system. The drum beat part of the recording prompted the family dog, a dearly-loved French poodle named Suzy, to suddenly start barking and running to the front door to bark some more. The drum beat part…sounded like someone was knocking on the door to Suzy!!!!
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Subject: I was listening Sunday afternoon Co-host of NPR’s Car Talk dies at 77. Not realizing the last Car Talk show taped in 2012. I enjoyed hearing ” Click and Clack ” not know that one of the brothers had Alzheimer’s. This is tough to read tonight, not expected, Leslie (www.chron.com/entertainment/article/Co-host-of-NPR-s-Car-Talk-dies-5866961.php?cmpid=bna) BOSTON (AP) Tom Magliozzi, one half of the brother duo who hosted National Public Radio’s “Car Talk,” where they bantered with callers and commiserated over their car problems, died Monday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, the news organization said. He was 77 years old.

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) From Bob Lefsetz (The Lefsetz Letter) in Santa Monica: “The Skip”: http://musicmachinery.com/2014/05/02/the-skip/ This is what you’re up against. Used to be the hard part was getting your track on the radio. Now the hard part is getting people to listen to the end. We’ve gone from a captive, limited marketplace to one in which everything is available and you can get me to click, but good luck getting me to stay. And don’t call it short attention span theatre, call it an incredible b.s. detector. People only want what appeals to them, instantly, that is great. There are exceptions. Online word of mouth can get people to stay, but that word has to be deafening. To quote from the article: “The likelihood that a song will be skipped within the first five seconds is an astounding 24.14%.” This is utilizing the Spotify data. And this also illustrates why the hoi polloi enjoy free Pandora for now, but probably not for the future. Because you can’t skip enough! We only want what we want 24/7.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In June 1988, Soul Singer James Brown’s wife claims Diplomatic Immunity because her husband is the Ambassador of Soul. The judge should dismiss her husband’s traffic ticket.
BILL CHERRY (Dallas, TX) [Realtor in late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] Jim, I’m convinced that the best programmer and voice are owned by the same man, Brad Chambers in Studio City, California. He owns and runs an internet radio station that he calls “Martini in the Morning.” I listen to him and it hours at a time every day. I am convinced that is the future of radio. I can buy a spot on an internet station and it can and will be heard around the world? If you’ve not listened before, here’s the link. http://martiniinthemorning.com/. Bill
