ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
WARD STEPS BACK Before he begins his 48 years as KTRK TV ABC CH 13 news anchor, Dave Ward is the first full-time reporter in 1963 on KNUZ-1230 at 4701 Caroline Street here in the Bayou City. We know that legendary KNUZ-1230 address quite well from our time there as noon-3 pm DJ in 1978. Since 1966, Dave Ward is Space City’s favorite TV news anchor at 6 pm and 10 pm. According to the Houston Business Journal, longtime KTRK anchor Dave Ward steps down from his 10:00 pm TV news anchor duties toward the end of 2014. But Dave continues to anchor the 6:00 pm newscasts in 2015. Dave Ward soothes his many fans: You have trusted me with the day’s news for almost 48 years. I’m not going anywhere! I’m just going to go home a little earlier, that’s all.

OTTAWA DITCHES BOB In May 2003, Bell Media CKKL FM Ottawa, Canada flips from CHR Kool FM 93.9 to Variety Hits Bob FM 93.9. In the Spring 2014 Numeris Ratings (formerly BBM), CKKL FM ties for tenth spot in the Ottawa market with a 2.6 share. On Monday, November 10, 2014 Bell Media fires its entire Bob FM on-air staff that includes morning hosts Cub Carson and Melanie Adams, Codi Jeffreys (afternoons), Milky (John Mielke) and evening/weekend host Darryl Kornicky. Radio Insight reports: The station (CKKL FM) is currently airing music with no imaging as it prepares to debut its new format. Sweepers indicating “A new radio station is coming soon” air in and out of stop sets. A rumor suggests that CKKL FM’s new format is Country.
THE BULL IS ON THE PROWL At 5:00am Monday, November 15, 2010 Corey Foley & Greg Thunder Morning Show ousts KILT FM’s long time morning hosts Hudson & Harrigan on The New Bull KILT FM (100.3). On December 6, 2013 Mark Adams VP/Programming KILT FM resigns after six years. In 2014, the Foley and Thunder morning show cashes in its KILT cow chips. Corey exits in April 2014. On Friday November 7th, Greg cuts and runs. Listeners believe that KILT FM’s bull is full of it. Since we flee KILT FM in 1996, a thought crosses our mind. Maybe KILT FM should bring back Hudson & Harrigan along with news powerhouse Robert B. McEntire to preach the Gospel to their adoring Bayou City radio fans. Bring it on!
SO LONG WSJ RADIO NETWORK From the WSJ Web site: For more than 30 years, The Wall Street Journal Radio Network is the leading provider of business news programming for radio stations all across the US. Locally, News/Talk KTRH-740 Houston, TX carries WSJ Business news reports along with The Wall Street Journal This Morning. NTS MediaOnline Breaking News: On Wednesday at 10am, November 12, 2014 WSJ Editor-in-chief Gerry Baker delivers the news that all radio operations would be shutting down as of December 31, 2014. Baker reportedly tells WSJ staff members that the broadcast radio network just doesn’t fit with the company’s future plans.

DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Radio Report. JIM…I got it. Also the bouncing around read-out. Very strange. You had a glitch in it. Starting to get cold in these parts. I will have to go to “Rural King” and buy some long jockie-underwear. Thermal type to stay warm! Wind will cut through you. Stay off the Great Lakes now – the Ore Boats don’t run after November; when the gales of November come calling – Lake Superior never gives up her dead! Edmund Fitzgerald – 29 men from Northern Ohio, and Canada. I was on that Boat in Cleveland for 20 minutes. Dave

JIM MCCURDY [Radio-TV vet] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Stations where I worked… Hey Jim, I hope your days is going well! Thanks for posting my comments on JRR, but I have a correction to make, you listed WRR-1310; KRLD-1080 and KXOL-1360 as places where I have worked. Actually I never worked at those stations! My pedigree is: KRBC-1470; KNIT-1280; KORQ/ KTLC-100.7; KRBC-TV News Anchor; KTAB-TV News Anchor. My last TV Newscast was in 1995, so I’ve been out of the biz for a while, but really enjoyed my time on the air as a DJ and as a TV News Anchor. Man, times have certainly changed since I was on the air. Some for the good and some not so good! My best to you!! Jim McCurdy

DON SUNDEEN [former KCOH-1430 OM/PD/DJ-Hi Records promotion-TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Look At Me, I’m Peggy Lee. My only real memory of Peggy Lee was at the time of “Is that all there is”, promotion man, Sammy Alfano, presented her with a $5000 cake to celebrate the record’s golden success. She loved it, and he got away with it. I imagine that knowing that she was the inspiration for Miss Piggy resonated with her need for love and attention in a very interesting way. After reading this, I was glad I never had to work with her, because I had plenty of “Problem Children” as it was, speaking of which; I’m trying to get my head around a Jerry Lee Lewis piece, there’s only room for so much craziness. [Look at Me, I’m Peggy Lee biography By Michelle Dean]

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo-Abilene, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio June 30, 2014 [Monday] Issue #1316. JIM: Like the new format too! Wonder if Bill Cherry recalls newsman Tom Wade, WWL?? Bob & Sonny Lee
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1954, Memphis, TN cops prohibit Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters’ “Honey Love” from being loaded into jukeboxes, due to what they considered “suggestive lyrics. In spite of the ban, Honey Love becomes the Drifters’ second #1 tune.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Subject: What WGN 720 Handles one of their own. Jim Rose Remembers Radio June 30, 2014 [Monday] Issue #1316 I can hear WGN after 11PM from my Cabin in the woods. Sound like the talent on the air from WGN 720 Chicago is having a conversation in my living room and it feels comforting. Though not feeling comfortable with what WGN did with Gary (Meier). Leslie
PEGGY LEE (November 1969) Is that all there is? Is that all there is? If that’s all there is my friends Then let’s keep dancing…and have a ball. If that’s all there is.
