RIP JOE KNIGHT During the golden age of Baltimore, MD radio a radio personality known to several generations of WFBR-1590 and WCBM-680 listeners as Joe Knight, the Knight of the Spinning Roundtable passes away at 87 on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, FL after he breaks his hip. Joe begins his radio career by sweeping the floors of a Great Bend radio station. When he becomes a senior in high school, Knight moves on up to weekend duty with station breaks. In the late 1940s, he gains an air shift on KFDA-1230 in Amarillo, TX. He later joins KRMG-740 in Tulsa, OK where his future wife of 58 years Bobbie Baland gives him the radio air name Joe Knight.

HIP HOP SHOOT OUT IN DALLAS, TX On Friday night, November 14, 2014 a pair of Dallas, TX radio stations line up for an OK Corral shoot out when they flip to Boom Classic Hip-Hop. First, at 5:00pm Cumulus CHR KLIF FM (Hot 93.3) Haltom City launches Classic Hip-Hop For The Holidays with a commercial-free weekend. Next, later in the evening, Radio One flips Urban AC KSOC FM (K-Soul 94.5) Gainesville as the third radio station to become Boom Classic Hip-Hop. Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins brags that in its first week on air KROI FM (Boom 92) Houston leaps from a 0.9 share under the previous format to over a 4 share. This leads to a massive Boom both in Philadelphia, PA and now Dallas, TX. They should all get inside a small room for a giant BOOM!
BIG D RADIO FLIPS FOR 8TH TIME KFXR-1190 (former KLIF-1190 powerhouse) Dallas, TX readies for yet another face-lift. Over the past 10 years KFXR-1190’s programming does an about-face 7 times. On Monday, November 17, 2014 KFXR-1190 bails out of its DFW 1190 brokered Talk and Business mix for repurposed content from within the company. Radio Insight (Http://RadioInsight.com/) gives us an idea of KFXR-1190’s new schedule. Talk Radio 1190 will air a replay of the previous afternoon’s Russ Martin Show from sister Rock KEGL FM [The Eagle 97.1] in mornings from 7-11am. A pair of shows from KTRH-740/KPRC -950 Houston, TX will be heard in afternoons: Matt Patrick from 2-5pm and Michael Berry from 5-7pm. The remainder of KFXR-1190’s new agenda remains under wraps.
WSJ MORNING SHOW SURVIVES CUT In Friday’s issue of JRRR, we note that Wall Street Journal terminates its radio network and the MarketWatch Radio Network in December 2014. WSJ moans and groans that the radio division does not fit with the company’s future business plans. NTS MediaOnline says not to worry because Compass Media Networks has reached a deal to take over syndicating the Wall Street Journal Radio Network’s popular morning show, with host Gordon Deal. The Peter Kosann-led Compass Media Networks has been handling affiliate and ad sales for the Wall Street Journal’s radio division since early 2014. Guess that means Gordon Deal’s The Wall Street Journal This Morning remains on NewsRadio KTRH-740 here in Houston, TX.

RED JONES [2008 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame – retired from WKNG-1060 [W] June 15, 2011 after 63 years in radio] (Carrollton-Tallapoosa, GA) Subject: Lost in the Fifties-fun. Those were great times. I feel sorry for anyone who wasn’t around to enjoy life then. As for the 5 Satins, that was the goodnight song at the end of every hop I did. Then while at WQXI in the 60s, a young blind guy going to college in North Ga. had a lil band playing weekends, including our hops in Atlanta. Ronnie was so talented. First car?…a 36 Ford when I graduated from H>S> in 48. After I returned from Army service (AFRTS) in 56, I bought a 55 T Bird with both tops and AC. Solid red with white interior. But when the family got larger, I had to buy a Rambler station wagon. Great times. Red Jones; Georgia Radio Hall of Fame

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, Hope this helps… I wish I had kept a diary but –alas –I did not. There was enough action, characters and national figures to write tons of books about. On my blog I have a short list of some of the celeb/world figure interviews I did. A short list includes George H.W. Bush (seems like I was always sticking a mic in his face), Nelson Rockefeller, Milton Friedman, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon (I was in Jones Hall when Dan Rather and Nixon exchanged barbs. Your friend, Len
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Peggy Lee and All That Jazz. My mother liked Peggy Lee on, I Don’t Want To Play In Your Yard Anymore. She liked the version used in a movie. My favorite is her with Benny Goodman, Why Don’t You Do Right. Though I also like playing the bass to her version of Fever, though I like Little Willie John version once I heard it. Tonight I went to the Dallas Art Museum and heard a local artist who is a very good vocalist: Damon K. Clark. He has a nice web site with MP3s of his singing. Also a few week ago I heard The John A. Lewis Trio, they do very good smooth but spirited Jazz. I have decided that most people regret more the things they did not do when they had the chance, than those things they did wrong. Mother told me, “The only ones who never make mistakes are those who never do anything. The person who cooks is going to make more mistakes than someone who doesn’t.” I admire the various paintings at the Dallas Art Museum, but have not started trying to paint, but have been having fun doodling on my computer. Charles George, KC5RAI
