TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim and Suzie, The three amigos with me are all old TV buddies of mine. The guy with his arm around me is a gentleman who grew up on Long Island, worked his way up through radio stations, including one in Odessa, Texas. He eventually wound up at the ABC News Network in NYC, writing and producing for the network on air guys, and got his TV break at Channel 7 in Boston during the early 70’s. The tall guy next to him also worked with me at Channel 7 in Boston before going to Channel 4 and WBZ Radio where he’s currently on air. The shorter man with glasses worked with me at Channel 5 in Boston during the late 70’s – early 80’s. T

JEFF THOMPSON [ex NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefeller Plaza-Thompson Comm] (Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC) Well, as of this year, I’ve been living in NC for 20 years! Whereas, I had expected to be here only a couple of years back in ’94. In the interim, I’ve also spent 14 of those years running my own media communications firm with clientele across the nation. So THAT’s my story. I read Jim Rose Remembers…near the east coast, from North Carolina, a long way from Houston, *(which was your initial premise of YOUR question to your readers.) All the best, Jeff Thompson

JOHN HALE (McKinney, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio December 01, 2014 [Monday] Issue #1360. Hi Jim, Just a quick note to say it was interesting reading the note from Jeff Thompson in this weekends’ column. Jeff says he’s from Mexia. So am I, and so were several other folks that went into broadcasting back in the ’60’s. Never could figure out what it was…maybe something in the water, but Mexia turned out more than its’ share of broadcasters…certainly more than you’d expect from a little town of less than 7,000 with a tiny little 500 watt radio station. (The old KBUS). John Hale; McKinney, Texas

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: local radio. The question is, “Can local radio survive in today’s world?” Many folks say that “local” radio as we knew it has long been a thing of the past. Today, most stations are part of corporate conglomerates. Most of the stations carry generic satellite programming from a network based in another city or state. The guys and gals who used to entertain us (disc jockeys) are mostly gone, especially in smaller markets. The local newsman in the KBOX Mobile Unit is gone, maybe replaced by a guy in a helicopter doing traffic reports. More and more, the big boys are axing local news to help satisfy the “bottom line”.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Rock group Black Sabbath says they get their name from a cinema across the street from the band’s rehearsal room, a 1963 Italian-French horror movie with Boris Karloff.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) This story really rang an old bell with me. Sometime in the late 90’s I was shooting a commercial with a semi-prominent Brit director/cameraman. I knew that in Swinging London in the 60’s he had been one of the leading still photographers taking pictures of the music groups, models, and even a royal or two. We were at dinner one night and I said it must have really been cool to be in London then, and he replied that it wasn’t as cool as being in the ‘Caves’ a few years later. I asked what ‘Caves’ he was talking about, and he gave me that look folks gave you when they were thinking you weren’t as hip as you thought you were. Anyway, it turns out the Caves of Matala were on a beach in Greece not far from Crete. For a time it was the place to go after dropping out of society and going off to ‘do your own thing.’ He said the climate was perfect and clothing was optional, virtually every drug known at that time was available and people could live well for pennies compared to the U.S. Anyway, I think that Joni (Mitchell) went there to get away from L.A. after separating from Graham Nash, a wonderful man, and stopped at the Caves for a while on her way to Paris. That’s where she met Cary Raditz, and later wrote the song ‘Carey’ (misspelled) about their relationship. The song is available above this paragraph and there are some small shots of the Caves below the picture. Like everything in the hippy era, the area’s been gentrified now and has hotels and condos surrounding the beach.
JONI MITCHELL (November 7, 1943 to p) My heart is broken in the face of the stupidity of my species.
