TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV, NYC WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Never saw any “Men in Black” movies. My recent favorite is Argo. Don’t take in more than a half-dozen movies a year. Guess that comes from growing up where there were no movie shows available except old silent films, and we had no money to spend on movies anyway…so I didn’t see a real movie until “Show White” came to a movie house in Beaumont. After that “Wizard of Oz” was my 2nd movie. The Wizard nearly scared me to death. In ’75, I got a part in “Marathon Man” with Dustin Hoffman, and after that I had bits in “True Colors” and “29th Street”…plus background actor scenes in a coupla dozen others, and day-player character parts in “All My Children” and “One Life to Live”. Loved being around movie sets and actors, and getting a close up and personal look at how they do it and put everything together.

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Don and Ira, the Stretcher Brothers, say Goodbye and Thank you. Picture of two old radio guys who just completed 7 years and over 500 radio shows for the blind, and won an International award for “Best Consumer Program in 2012,” and last year “Program of the Year” for a highly produced Labor Day Special that ran in many markets. The first clip is a portion of our last show recapping the years and shout outs to those who supported us, the second is the story that ran on KERA FM this morning. We had a great run and a lot of fun, plus the satisfaction that comes from serving others. The older one gets, the more one understands that nothing lives forever, especially in these times of rapid technological change and tight money. Ira Lipson and Don Sundeen

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) I remember hearing about Elkins, although I didn’t know much about them. My former studio business partner had gone there and gotten his first. I never had an actual license; I got a 3rd class radiotelephone permit, which was obtained by merely filling out an application. I think it was actually used more by military radio operators, but it did give djs authority to read the transmitter readings and fill out the log. I’m surprised I didn’t really go ahead and get a first phone. I’ve been into ham radio since I was 14, plus I was a radio operator in the Civil Air Patrol up in my hometown. Interesting about the $65/week; that’s what I made in 1957 at WDXI in Jackson, TN. When I started at WHBQ, I was disappointed that they would only pay me $75/week, but I knew it would get better…after 6 months at WHBQ, they doubled my pay.
