JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: WHQ. Jim: We struck out in getting WHBQ’s old Hotel Chisca’s studios made into a museum; seems that we who were there while those great studios were operational, Wink Martindale, George Klein, and a few others, are the only ones who really believed it. However, the actual walls of Dewey’s old control room, Control B, have actually been taken down and moved to a special place upstairs over the original Sun Studio at 706 Union Ave. here in Memphis. The people at Sun consulted often with Wink and me, since we worked there in those days, and they did an excellent job us putting that together as part of their museum. It’s just like it was then, even a broken lp on the floor! Dewey Phillips was famous for listening to records and if he didn’t like them he’d toss ’em against the wall and break them. I’ve never know any person in the world who was 100 percent right everytime he’d listen to a new record…he had the best ear anywhere! Jack Parnell

He and his long-time KWTX Broadcasting Company investors put KWTX-FM on the air in 1970. KWTX-TV (Channel 10) went on the air in 1955. What a legacy! Mike Braun, KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Many people consider Led Zeppelin one of the greatest bands of the Golden Age of rock . Founder Jimmy Page was innovator of their sound and success. The word genius is used a lot, but many musicians say he really has a gift. I had a close encounter with the Zep one night. A Brit group called SLADE, well known in the UK, but new to the U.S., played in my area and I went to show Label support. Noddy Holder, the frontman said, “The Zep may drop by the show tonight, because we’re mates.” I knew that Led Zeppelin was in town resting for an arena show, but doubted that they would attend Slade’s. The house was rocking when a roady came over and told me to look at the box seats on the wall of the theater. To my amazement, there were all four of the Zeppelin watching their friends. No other band was as big as Led Zeppelin, and that success can mostly be attributed to the brilliant Jimmy Page, called a Rock God in GQ Magazine. TRIVIA ANSWER: In December 1960, vocal group The Brooktones sign with Cameo/Parkway Records, who encourages them to change their name to the Deauvilles after the Deuville Hotel in Miami Beach. The boys in the group think it is too difficult to spell. So, they shorten Deauvilles to the Dovells. Around Thanksgiving 1961, their first hit Bristol Stomp remains #2 for 2 weeks.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Scott Arthur at KNUZ/KQUE was the Club Dj in Gingers Lounge inside the South West Hilton between Hillcroft and Gessner on 59 South in 1983, 1984. Scott Suggested that I take over as club Dj as he was getting busier with other work he was doing. I enjoyed this and had a great time then the oil business stopped and the Hilton layed off in November 1984. So I had 11 months as club Dj at the South West Hilton. Dave Ward I saw twice sitting in the dark at 10:43 p.m. How did Dave Ward arrive into the Club so quickly? The Temptations and the Four Tops performing in The Atrium kept me company as they stayed with us one night. Leslie
