BREAKING NEWS! FRENCH SHOOTERS IDENTIFIED French video shows the shooters with AK47 assault rifles. Retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, Fox News analyst says: …this was a carefully planned, sophisticated operation by well-trained, well-armed veterans of jihad. French police identify the three Islamist butchers as two brothers, Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi (32 and 34) as well as 18-year-old Hamyd Mourad. One official admits they link to a Yemeni terrorist network. Is this a wakeup call to journalists who report on Mid-East terrorism?

TOM ELLIS [KONO-860/KONO TV] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim and Suzie, As they say …. in life, timing is everything. Being somewhere at the right time can mean the difference between life and death in the broadcast business. Lady Luck smiled on me for sure…but had it not been for LUCK and TIMING, I probably would not have made out as well as I did. Also, talent and raw instinct play a big part…knowing when to jump when opportunity knocks…and knowing the right words to say when the time is right. Tom

ROBERT MILLER [Eastern Michigan University Professor] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Hey Jim, I see Bruce Hathaway’s name regularly in your column and remember him fondly when he was one of the giants of San Antonio radio. When I was just a kid he was in a drag race against my dad, Les Miller of WOAI, in the early 60’s As I recall it was a promotion for Pontiac. My dad was so used to driving his old stick shift Plymouth wagon, he instinctively tried to “shift” and lost by a quarter mile to Bruce! I remember Bruce as a gentleman and a great jock! MIKE MARSHALL [former KQUE FM/Tweeters] (Houston, TX) A little background on me. I grew up in Fort Worth, worked at hometown KFJZ 60-67 with two years out while I was in the army. Lucked out and got assigned to American Forces Network, Europe, first in Frankfurt, then a year in West Berlin. From KFJZ, as Jim (Rose) said, I moved to WFAA 570/820 in Dallas, the only remaining station in the states that operated on two frequencies. In 1969, I got a call from Buddy Holiday at KPRC. Bill Enis, who had been my PD at KFJZ was Sports Director at KPRC-TV and had recommended me for a 4-7 opening. I started in September 1969. Six months later Buddy was replaced by Buzz Lawrence who cleared out everybody but Tim and Bob. About a year later, I started at “Gentle on Your Mind” KXYZ, 1320. They went rock three years later . In 1974, Bill Wamsley hired me to do overnight at KULF with the promise that he would move me to days the first time there was an opening. Staff as I remember was Jim Tate, Jim Heath, Joe Bauer, Gary Ryder and me. There were daytime openings but they always went to someone Bill Bosse “had to have”, so after two years, I left in June. 1976. That was my last full time radio gig. I started selling stereo gear at Home Entertaiment and went back to weekends at KPRC for six years. In 1983, I added 9 to midnight at KQUE to my day job for nearly 14 years until SFX bought it and ran a satellite show from 6PM-6-AM, replacing me and Webb Hunt.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 9, 1964 Capitol Records releases The Four Preps’ record Letter To The Beatles. The lyrics portray a boy who is sad because he loses his girlfriend to The Fab Four. On its first day, the record shoots to #85 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Looks like The Preps may have another hit record. Regrettably they use a few bars from The Beatles hit tune I Want To Hold Your Hand without their permission. Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein threatens to sue The Preps. Capitol removes the single. Its employees smash copies of the single with mallets.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad prod] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Bess Myerson, Dies at 90. “First and only Jewish woman to be Crowned Miss America.” I had a crush on her as I sat on the floor in front of the old black and white TV in my Roy Rogers P.J.s, laughing along with the audience at the pithy comments made by the panelists on “I’ve got a secret,” even though I had no idea what was so funny. But that’s what unrequited love can do to you.
