CUTBACK ELIMINATES SPUD ON WWWL In 2013, longtime Entercom WWL-870 New Orleans, Talk host John [Spud] McConnell moves across the hall to host the PM Drive show on Sports Talk WWWL-1350 (3WL). In 2015, Entercom New Orleans VP/GM Chris Claus tells Times-Picayune’s David Lee Simmons: I love Spud. He’s a great entertainer, he’s a great host, he’s a great actor, he’s great in theater, he’s great in TV, and he’s great in the movies. But, unfortunately, we had a position to eliminate and his was the one.

MICHAEL O’SHEA [former KLIF-1190 PD/DJ] (Santa Rosa, CA) Hi Jim… Rayfield Wright…a mountain of a man. Gentle Giant. Some great memories for both of us. It’ll be fun watching Icebowl 2 tonight…though it looks to be a “balmy” 20 degrees in Green Bay. They better bring the sun block . By the way, before your readers chastise BOTH of us for getting George Andrie’s uniform number wrong…it was actually #66 as I recall, and quite sure I’m correct on that one. I take great pride in committing memory virtually EVERY Cowboy player number from that pre-70 era. Go Cowboys! MO

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360, KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Jim, interesting note about Hal McClain’s death. Mike Cannon and I were going to meet up at the Kerrville airshow (the day Hal died) to watch him fly. Mike had some car trouble with his Volkswagen, if I recall, and I had to cover (of all things) a plane crash in a cornfield. The DJ at KGKL got in touch with me and told me he saw on the AP wire that hal had crashed and died. bad day. it’s a bad day when ANY of us old timers passes. Ben Harold

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Newhart in Houston. Hey Jim, Did you know that one of the best selling comedy LP’s of all time was recorded right there in Houston? Absolutely true. The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart is a 1960 live album by comedian Bob Newhart. Recorded at the Tidelands Club in Houston, Texas, The debut album by Newhart was number one on the Billboard Pop Album chart, topping an album by Elvis Presley and the cast album of The Sound of Music. Button Down Mind won Album of the Year at the 1961 Grammy Awards and Newhart was named Best New Artist. It was the first comedy album to win Album of the Year and the only time a comedian has won Best New Artist. Newhart wanted the title to be The Most Celebrated New Comedian Since Attila the Hun, but Warner Bros. suits created the album’s title and Newhart had to settle for his idea as a subtitle. The album was a 2006 entry into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. According to an NPR interview with Newhart, it is the 20th-best-selling of all time on Billboard’s charts. One other factoid: Before the Bob Newhart recording, two Brother Dave Gardner albums were also recorded at the Tidelands. Those albums were on RCA Victor and were produced by RCA’s Nashville office, which at that time was run by Chet Atkins. Atkins liked Houston, and he always came to the Tidelands Club when he was in town. He was friends with the manager, so sometime in 1959, Atkins asked if he could bring an unknown comedian in for a show that would be recorded for release on an album. The manager said sure, why not, nothing to lose, and the rest is history. Just thought you’d like to know, Be safe and be blessed.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1966, The Monkees ride tall in the saddle with three #1 hits, three Top 5 tunes, plus 58 episodes of The Monkees TV shows. Britisher Davy Jones is a singer with The Monkees. To avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, singer David Jones changes his last name to Bowie. In summer 1975, David Bowie’s single Fame nails #1 and remains there for 2 weeks. Another #1 comes for Bowie in 1983 with half million seller Let’s Dance. In 1985, Mick Jaggar teams with David Bowie on Dancing in the Street at #7.
JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Morning Jim: I can’t remember his exact times of being in Houston, nor even the stations he ran, but was Jay Cook running one of the Houston stations when you were doing Houston radio? He ran an am/fm operation there just prior to becoming president of Gannett Radio. JP
GLEN CAMPBELL (April 22, 1936 – p) I’ve been walkin’ these streets so long Singin’ the same old song I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway Getting cards and letters from people I don’t even know And offers comin’ over the phone.
