JEFF THOMPSON [NBC News, 30 Rockefeller Plaza] (Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: LBJ’s Chopper over Texas. It was strange reading my UT classmate, Tom Ellis’s description of his seeing a helicopter for the first time in 1948, as Senatorial Candidate Lyndon B. Johnson flew over Tom’s small East Texas town of Carthage, using a bullhorn to drum up votes. Well, it’s very likely it was SAME day that I saw MY first chopper, when LBJ flew likewise westward over my little Central Texas home town, Mexia, (pop.6,280 souls) I was only 11 years old, not even imagining that I would also study at UT to become a Radio & TV reporter. Nor could I dream of touching so many bases with LBJ, as a Senator, Vice President, and as President of the United States. At his and NASA’s invitation, I even once flew in HIS seat, on his mini-Presidential Jetstar plane, landing on his short runway, ending behind his ranch house, where a single very large photo stands, showing LBJ, Astronaut Wally Schirra and his Apollo 7 crew mates, plus, a couple of reporters. including me. I’m visible, still laughing from a conversation I had just enjoyed just moments before with LBJ and Rocket Scientist Dr. Werher von Braun. Who’d have thought?

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: Terry Dorsey Dies. KSCS announced Sunday that longtime Dallas radio personality Terry Dorsey died suddenly at his retirement home in Illinois. “Terry had not been feeling well these past few days, and it was rather sudden,” wrote Mark “Hawkeye” Louis, who had co-hosted the popular morning show with Dorsey since 1988. “My heart is broken over the loss.” John Morris, Dorsey’s producer at KSCS for the past four years, said he got word of Dorsey’s death late Sunday morning through the station’s program director, and he was stunned by the news. “Our GM sent out an e-mail saying it was natural causes, but we’re really not sure what it was,” Morris said.”Everyone was completely blindsided by this,” he added. “Everybody’s in a state of shock. Nobody was expecting this.” According to Dorsey’s official biography, he was one of the few people who had won radio awards from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and Billboard magazine. He was a member of the Country Music On-Air Personality Hall of Fame and the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He retired in December, ending a 33-year run on the North Texas airwaves. “I’m just tired,” he told WFAA’s Good Morning Texas in December. “I’m tired all the time; you just can’t catch up.”

Terry and I worked together in Dayton Ohio back in the 70’s.
